Need help with ethernet
Hi, I am currently using cable to connect to one of the ports at my college. Everything was fine until one day, I couldn't browse any website by either IE or Firefox. It's still said that I was connected but I can't access any internet services ( websites, Yahoomessenger, update kaspersky ). I have tried to scan for virus and malware, using winsockfix, reinstall the driver but everything was no use. IP and DNS are set automatic and I am still able to send and receive packets ( but by far more sent than received, it's like 3000 sent and 100 received ). When I came to my friend's room, I was still able to connect normally. And when I borrowed his laptop, there was no problem with it when connected to the port in my room. I have asked the IT guy at my college but he said that the port in my room was fine and he couldn't do anything since it's not the fault of the college network. Can anyone help me please ?
This is what I got when using ipconfig/all

Can you remember which date back it worked fine? It might be worth doing a system restore to somewhere on or before that date and see if internet behaves as normal. To do a system restore in XP:

  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts.
  2. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next.
  3. On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system restore point in the On this list, click a restore point list, and then click Next.

Note A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.
  4. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer.
  5. Logon and see if things have improved?

NOTE: CORRECTION!!! On item 3 pick a restore date on or before the problems started and dont pick the most recent one in case that was after problems began!!!

Thanks for advice, I have tried that but it doesn't seem to fix the problem. Still connected but no internet.

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands.

Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution.

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 74.125.45.100

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. (For Vista/Win7, the IPv4 Address)

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Are you SURE that connection works? Have you tried another computer using the same cable and port?

Well, it's looking like you have either a NIC hardware or driver issue. If you've downloaded and installed the latest drivers, I'd have to suspect the NIC.

So what should I do now ???
It's really funny and annoying that I can connect from other ports but not from the damn port in my own room.

Are you saying that NIC on the machine connects to other connection in different locations?
