Question Solved: How to Share Files on Computers Connected to Different Routers?
My WAN connection (ADSL2+) goes into a Draytek Vigor 2800VG, which is a combo ADSL modem - Firewall - Router - Print Server - Wireless Access Point. It's gateway IP address is 192.168.1.1. There are a number of computers and other equipment connected wirelessly to it, with IP addresses starting from 192.168.1.101. Another unit that is connected by LAN to the Draytek is an Apple Time Capsule and its IP address is 192.168.1.110. The Time Capsule is not in bridge mode. Wirelessly, a MacBook Pro and an iPhone are connected to the Time Capsule, with IP addresses starting from 10.0.1.101. How could I see shared folders on the computers connected to the Drayyek from the MacBook Pro? I can ping the Draytek (192.168.1.1) but if I try to ping 192.168.1.101 I get request timed out? Thank you.

You never say what operating systems are running on the other computers. If you are running Windows XP, here is some information that may help:

How to mount a Windows shared folder on your Mac

What other equipment do you wish to connect to besides the computers?

FWiW, your computer security and firewall settings may cause them to ignore pings.

The computers on the Draytek router operate on Windows XP Professional or Home. On the Mac I have OS 10.6.2. I use ZoneAlarm on the PCs but I added the Mac's IP address in the trusted zone.

If I connect the Mac to the Draytek, I can see the shared folders on the PCs; however, this way backups are not performed on the Time Capsule any longer, so it defeats the purpose.

There should be something to do with the computers connected to different routers having different IP address ranges... How could I deal with it?

Is the IP address of the WAN side of the Time Capsule in the trusted zone?

Do you have the option of connecting the LAN side of the Draytek router to the LAN side of the Time Capsule? That would put all computers on the same subnet. You would need to turn off DHCP on the Time Capsule and make other settings changes. One our moderators, JohnWill, has a very good write up on how to configure two routers to work in this manner. An advanced search of this site for a post by JohnWill that has the word SOHO should find a recent post of his with the instructions.

I added the IP address on the WAN side of the Time Capsule to the trusted zone on the PC connected to the Draytek modem, as you suggested, and IT WORKS!!!

I could have set up the Time Capsule in bridge mode but, for certain reasons, I preferred to have the routers in a double NAT configuration (I wanted to do MAC filtering separately on the Draytek and the Time Capsule).

I will wait for one day in case you would like to make any additional comments before I mark this thread 'Solved'.

Thank you, cwwozniak!

You are welcome.

I thought it was going to be a more difficult problem at first.

FYI, marking a topic as solved does not prevent adding more posts. The function is more to let members looking to help others to know they don't need to open a solved topic.
