Solved: PPP will not switch to PPI
I am having trouble with a pc that has Windows 98 as it's os. Here is the background I can supply:

We HAD Comcast Cable internet service, 98 pc was hardwired into my LinkSys modem & everything was fine.

We SWITCHED TO AT&T DSL for our internet provider, switched to their modem, and now the 98 pc can not connect through the router. It can, however, connect directly through the modem.

I called LinkSys, and they managed to somewhat isolate the problem but since it was something that they were not educated in they could help me no further.

What we found out is that when I do the winipcfg in run my ip configuration box pops up and it it set on the PPP option. When we tried to reset, release, reset all, release all, and switch to the PPI option, before and after punching these buttons, then hitting the ok button it always returns to the PPP configuration.

Apparently this is what is causing the 98 pc not to connect? I don't really understand it because it was hardwired into the same router just a week ago and worked fine. And it also still works if it is hardwired directly to the modem.

Really frustrating. Any ideas? (& thank you for your time.)

**I am getting the error msg "dhcp unavailable" when I try to reset also.

You probably shoul get this switched to the Networking forum.
Click the report button at the bottom of your post and ask a moderator to move this to Networking.

Note: I will request that this be moved for you.

I have never heard of PPI in reference to networking, only in reference to imaging.
Pixels Per Inch.

You should post the following information.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL (space between the G and /)

NBTSTAT -n (space between T and -)

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Give this Automated WINSOCK Fix all Windows Versions a try, then post the following with the cable connected to the router.

Start, Run, COMMAND to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL >c:\IPCONFIG.TXT

Open c:\IPCONFIG.TXT in NOTEPAD, copy and paste all of it in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Thank you for your help and suggestions, I have called and complained endlessly to AT&T, they came out and reinstalled our outside lines and what do you know ... the next morning it just starts working.

Again, your help is very much appreciated.

Sometimes calling tech support does work.

JohnWill,
Just curious. What does PPI stand for in networking?

These ar some uses I know.

Imaging - pixels per inch

Economics - producers price index

Textiles - picks (threads) per inch (weft)

Publishing - pages per inch
