I am trying to help my sister she has less knowledge than me.

She as a new laptop working fine on Netgear Router with AOL
We are now trying to set her old desktop with the netgear usb adapter.
Put the USB cd in the desk top finds the connection to Router,
When we try to connect to Internet no connection.
Should I have first used the ROUTER cd withe the cable to set that up first?
Sorry i am so vague but not really Tech minded

You should always configure a router with a wired connection.

When you say sees the router do you mean that the computer can see the gateway but is not getting an IP address or the other way around you should run ipconfig and post what you get as the output here so we can better help you as I dont exactly understand what you mean.

Sounds like to me you can see the router but arent getting the internet connection? am I correct and as JohnWill said setting up the router from a wired connection even if its just sitting down with a laptop for 10 minutes next to the router with a patch cable will save you a ton of time and effort.
