XP Pro Home Network fails after "Critical Updates"
Home Networked Laptop can not access "shareddocs" or printer on "Tower". XP Pro on both systems, connected via Linksys Router (hardwire Cat 5e). "Critical Updates" installed 6-8 wks ago. NO PROBLEMS 'TIL THEN. Tower can R/W/D shardeddocs on Laptop. Laptop can not see "tower" nor tower attached printer (USB) on home network or my network places. Renaming 'puters, new home network, network wizard...all fail. Even restore system back to last June fails to fix. Network wizard will not allow addition of new "my network places". Until now, I've never run into a Microsoft issue I could not beat into submission with in a few hours. Any successful help greatly appreciated. More specifics provided as needed. [Note: ping works both ways by address or computer name, with or w/o firewall on. I also followed all suggestions in thread "799591-solved-home-ofc-network... still failing] Stymied... trl01

Found Partial Fix
With the help of my brother, I found a partial fix. The problem is that, although "started" and "automatic", the "server" service under Administrative Services has to be "Re-Started" every time I boot up the tower. Once done, my wife's laptop can see my tower shared folder and print on my attached printer, until the next time I shut down my tower. Now I just need to find out what is interfering with the "server" service. trl01

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, each followed by the Enter key:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

See if that solves the issue of the service not starting.

Cool Still not fixed
John, Thank you. I ran the commands as suggested, successfully. However, I still have to manually go into Admin Tools, Services, and "restart" the "Server". All is good if I do but, although it reads as "started", "automatic", the networked laptop still fails to see my tower or attached printer without the "restart" command but, I can still see the "SharedDocs" on the laptop prior to the "restart". Thanks for the suggestions. I won't give up until this is figured out. trl01
