Laptop can't connect to internet
Hi guys, my laptop isn't able to resolve a wired network connection. Repairing doesn't do anything, winsock fix didn't do anything, and I can't find any other way to fix it. Here's the ipconfig:

Connected through a 4 port ethernet hub and a comcast gateway. Doesn't work even when i bypass the hub. Just got the laptop back from a friend who was using it at his network, could that have messed it up?

Try this, assuming you have SP2 or 3 ...

(From a JohnWill post)

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2 or SP3.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Is it still getting a bad (instead of null) Default Gateway?

Pinging the Default Gateway (169.254.101.17) sends/receives 4 with 0% loss.

Try uninstalling the network adapter in Device Manager and rebooting the system and letting it be discovered again.

I don't see a wireless adapter in your IPCONFIG, how old is this laptop? Are you SURE the cable and port on the router/switch is good?

The cable is definitely good, but I'll try another one I have laying around. Funny you should mention the wireless adapter, it got fried a few years ago when I had some overheating issues. When I had a wireless connection I would use a USB wireless adapter.

I'll try uninstalling the network adapter and rebooting, but I believe I've already given that a go.

Uninstalling drivers didn't work, still giving the limited or no connectivity. Could the network card itself be fried?

I think that the NIC is at least partially fried. Here are two things that shouldn't be necessary, but sometimes will keep a not-perfect NIC in service.

Right click on the ethernet card in Device Manager - Properties - Advanced. There is probably a "speed & duplex" setting and it is probably set to 'Auto Detect.' Try some other settings, beginning with 100 Mbps Full Duplex and 10 Mbps Full Duplex.

Try a static IP configuration: In Network Connections right click on your ethernet connection - Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) - Properties. The IP should be in the IP range used by your router but outside the Dhcp server's address range. Mask 255.255.255.0. Default Gateway the LAN IP address of the router. DNS Server either the router's address or the address of an actual DNS server (e.g., one that your ISP assigns to the router's WAN).

John may well have some other things to test or try.

Hmm, so I brought my laptop to my parents house for Thanksgiving break and I still wasn't able to connect to the internet. Figuring the card was fried, I bought a Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC card and it worked right when I connected it to the router.

Fast forward one week, I have the laptop back at my house and I can't connect to my network Doing an ipconfig /all yeilds

could it be something with my router settings or the new hub?

Sure. One thing that we tend to forget to mention is that the router's Dhcp server could be disabled. Or it could have a very small IP address range, and all addresses are already used.

It could also be the router LAN port or any cables and devices (switch, hub) between router and computer. Best to see if another computer can connect with the same LAN port, cable(s), etc.
