XP won't connect to wireless internet
I am having a huge problem with my computer's internet. I can not connect to most wireless internet routers, although i was able to connect to one at my friend's house(sorry don't know what kind). Any time I try to connect to it without messing with any settings it always says Status: Acquiring Network Address. and it gets no further
I recently installed Windows XP on my MacBook and installed all the correct drivers and everything. I know it is not my wireless card because, as before, I was able to connect to a wireless once. But since my house uses only Macs we bought an Apple Airport which also backs up our computers every hour and is very handy but it will not connect to the XP on my Mac. I have booted on the Mac side of it and it works perfectly so I can't figure out whats goin on. I am connected right now on an ethernet cable so its not my internet but the router.
I am truly baffled... any help on solving this problem would be appreciated.

p.s. I found the IP address of my other computer in my house and put in a manual IP address on this comp and it connects perfectly to the router but does not let me surf the web.

Hello & Welcome to Tech Guy Forum:
Please provide:
Version of XP & service pack
Brand, model & model # of your wireless device
Brand, model & model # of your router.

Which encryption are you using?

Which firewall are you using?

Can the computer in question access the internet using an ethernet port?

Set your computer back to obtain an ip address automatically and obtain DNS servers automatically.

THEN:

Go to a command prompt
Type: cd\
press "enter"
type: ipconfig /all
note space between ipconfig & /
note no space between / & all

RIGHT click the black screen.
Left click "select all"
On your keyboard, hold down ctrl, tap "C" to copy information to your computer's clipboard
return here.
Paste results into a reply.
Post the results

IP addresses of all zeros are normally caused by one of the following.

Diagnosis:
  1. DHCP Service not running.
  2. Duplicate IP address on the network.
  3. Bad NIC card drivers.
  4. Defective NIC hardware.

Resolution:
  1. Check Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. The DHCP Client service should be Started and its Startup Type should be Automatic.
  2. Turn off ALL of the computers and other network connected devices, restart (power cycle) the router, then restart all the computers and other network devices.
  3. Check for upgraded drivers and/or reload the Network drivers.
  4. Replace the Network Interface Card.

I don't know about Apple computers. Every IBM compatible laptop I have encountered has
has a PCMCIA port, into one can insert an ethernet card, wifi card, USB & / or 1394 ported card.

On an IBM compatible PC, one would disable the integrated NIC in the BIOS. I don't know about Apple computers.
