find a guy who knows something about computers, and ask him to update the wifi driver on your laptop. that should be the easiest way, since it differs by the laptop and the wifi card.

log into your wireless router and see if any of the administration pages allows you to set or turn off the RTS/CTS feature.

tell us the differences between the 2 laptops, i.e. the one which is working, and the one which is giving problems. is the problem laptop old compared to the other one, or compared to the wireless router? then it could probably not support the level of security that your wireless router is using. because i think wpa might use some kind of changing key or something.

maybe you can try turning off the wpa security or use a wep security on the wireless router to see if that is the problem.

to find ot the kind of card in your laptop, right click on My Computer -> manage
click on Device Manager
go to network adapters or ethernet cards
see which wireless card or adaptor you have over there
click on it and there could be options to update the driver. The driver could be in the installation cd which came with the laptop.
do a search on google to see if the card gives any known problems with your wireless router.

What in the world are you talking about here? You're confusing WiFi with serial communications!

Hi John. Yes, it does still see them, and it still says it's connected to the WiFi, it just doesn't work on any browser. Restart and it'll work again. Very odd.

Hi again, sorry, just saw the previous post. I have, it's an Atheros AR9285 wireless card. (Asus EEE 1001HA). There appear to be problems getting it to work with Ubuntu but nothing like this problem seems to be cropping up with various searches on known problems.

I meant, from a computer which is connected to your wireless router (wireless or otherwise), logon to the administrator pages of the wireless router and check if there is a RTS/CTS thing you can set or turn off. RTS/CTS is a default in 802.11 but I don't remember if the option is actually there in the administration pages. I left my wireless administrator's post 2 years back.

jblonde, did you try turning off the security in the router, or using wep instead of wpa.

RTS/CTS is only applicable if there are 802.11b clients, I don't think that's the case here. In any case, I've never seen this setting in any SOHO router.

Hi again. Unfortunately I have tried turning security on and off (and disabling the wireless
router's firewall) but neither of them made a difference. That's why I came here! Thanks for the ongoing help though.

Right. This is really starting to do my head in at the moment because today it has gone down again. My wife said to me that it's always after 15 mins of being on. When it is about to stop working the bottom left hand corner of Chrome says 'resolving proxy' when she tries to go to a hyperlink and then it goes down.

Today when it went down I launched the WiFi inspector and it showed all networks and showed as being fully connected. What the heck is the problem??? (iPhone and Laptop were not connected at the time, but both worked fine straight away when I came back to the forum)

Please continue to try to help... I am rubbish at networking problems.

Hmm... Resolving Proxy sounds odd.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
  1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
  2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
  3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

I'd like to see this as well.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
