Solved: Not sure what the problem is.....
Hopefully someone can lead me in the right direction. My desktop PC will not connect to the internet but both of my laptops will. I'm sure this may be an easy fix for you, but for me, well, I'm not computer savvy................

what is the configuration from the wall? Is there a router or a switch involved? What type of connection are you using, dialup or broadband? Or wireless?

Has this destkop ever connected to the internet before?

In short, we need more info.

Yes, the desktop connected the other day. The Linksys is a wireless-G broadband router, model # WRT54GS.

do you have a cable modem or some such in the mix as well? If so, try to connect the desktop directly to the cable modem and see if you can get out that way.

Also, from the desktop, if you could perform the following:

click start > run > cmd > type ipconfig /all > right click in the dos box > click 'select all' > hit enter > come back here and paste the results please.

thanks,

v

Save the information to a text file on a flash drive. Then put the flash drive in the other computer, open it, and copy and paste the info here.

Thought I could do that but it doesn't give me that option. When I right click the options I get are: Mark, Paste, Select All, Scroll, Find.

click start > run > type in notepad > enter > right click > paste > file > save as > this will bring up a dialog box, on the left you will see icons, click on the desktop icon > on the bottom of the dialog box it will be labeled '*.txt > replace the * with ipconfig and click on 'save.

no worries.

Nothing in your IPCONFIG is worth anything to someone trying to hack you.

I suggest enabling DHCP on the connections. With that wireless configuration, it would not be possible to ever get an Internet connection.

Select Start > Settings > Network Connections.
  • Double-click the Connection icon of the connection you wish to modify to open the Connection Status window.
  • Click the Properties button to open the Connection Properties window.
  • Click to highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
  • Click the Properties button to open the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.
  • TCP/IP Properties window, IP Address tab
  • Select Obtain an IP address automatically.
  • Select Obtain DNS server address automatically.
  • Click OK to return to the Local Area Connection Properties window.
  • Click OK to return to the Network Connections window.
