Red face Solved: Can't Connect to Wifi Network
Hi all,

I've read through threads but they don't seem to answer my dilemna.
I have a Cisco Systems Linksys router & my laptop says I am connected to "linksys" but I can't browse or link to any websites.
I don't know what other details to add but would really appreciate some help...

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried doing an ipconfig on the computer? If you need instructions, post back and we will give them to you.
Oh, we also need to know what operating system you are using.

I just noticed that you already have a post on this problem.
http://forums.techguy.org/web-email/...ected-but.html
We are supposed to work thru only one subject at a time and not in multiple postings for the same item.
I rather imagin that a moderator will probably be along to merge the 2 postings and close one of them.

I had the same problem before and got it working by changing the router's SSID from linksys to something else. Also, change the channel to 1, 9 or 11. For more information on how to do this, click here.

Hi Vicks,

I am running Windows XP.
I closed (or thought I had) closed the other posting because I am using another router, I figured the other was just broken. Could you please tell me as how to do the ipconfig? Also should I unplug the internet cable from my computer when I do this?
Thanks in advance.

Hi KMTech,

I already tried changing the SSID name and it showed as changed & connected but I was still unable to browse the internet & said that I wasn't connected wirelessly. I used 192.168.1.1 & configured the router the SSID. After it didn't work, I restored factory default settings. Right now I have the internet cable plugged directly into my computer.
Thanks for the help!

Click on start>run. type iin cmd, click okay. When command comes up (black background with white letters) type: ipconfig /all (note space between ipconfig /all) click enter. When that is done: again type: ipconfig /flushdns.
Then try connecting to the wifi.
It is fine to do this with everything connected, in fact it is better to do so.
I believe in your other post someone posted more complete directions to do this...
Post back and let us know how it goes.

Hello,

It worked!!! Thank you so much for all of your help! If you have the time, could you tell me what the ipconfig did?
I really appreciate you taking the time to post directions. You probably don't need it but just in case here are the results from the ipconfig:

Thank you so so much again.

Glad we found a solution. Feel free to mark this as solved.
ipconfig is for internet protocol configuration. Each computer has it's own IP address and I don't understand how it works, just know it does. Here is a link to a deffination that might make it clearer for you.

Hey Vicks,

I'm afraid I spoke too soon...I was online and my internet connection all of a sudden said limited/no connectivity. I tried switching routers (I have two: an older linksys model# befw11s4 and a newer linksys #WRT54G2V1), doing the ipconfig/ all & flushdns to no avail...
The computer will say I am connected but I can't browse or do anything.
I am doing an ipconfig all/ while plugged in directly and will post the results below. Thanks in advance and hope you're there!

-----I'm not sure I know how to close threads so I hope people respond to this one----

Thanks again,

You close a thread by clicking on the "solved button" at the top of the original post.
I am hoping that perhaps John Will or TerryNet will see this and help you ....They have much more experience than I do...

It appears you have connectivity to the router, so we'll need to do some tests.

First off, let's disconnect the wireless connection and just work with the wired connection until we get it working. Less confusion that way, and it doesn't appear you have a wireless issue.

When you have the problem of failure to connect, I want you to do the following tests.

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands.

Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution.

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 74.125.45.100

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. (For Vista/Win7, the IPv4 Address)

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
