Unhappy Yet another Unable to contact DHCP server/No Internet Connection thread...
Hello all, I was wondering if anyone can help me with my problem:

My sister's computer has decided to stop connecting to the internet since yesterday with the standard "Limited or No Connectivity" speech. We run 3 different laptops through the main computer's wireless network (which has the wired connection to the modem) and while the others are working fine, hers has the problem. Here are her specs:

Notebook: NEC Versa P8210
Notebook's Adapter: D-Link Wireless G DWA-110 USB Adapter
Modem: Belkin Wireless modem VoiP 802.11g gateway
Security: WEP (I tried changing it to WPA, but no computer could connect afterwards, so I switched back).
OPS: Windows XP Professional SP3

Things I have tried to do:

- enabled/disabled connection - no effect
- forced static IP address - This got me a full connection, but I couldn't ping or access the internet...?
- Ipconfig /flushdns, /release, /renew etc. - /renew get's stuck on "Unable to contact DHCP server"
- netsh winsock reset - no effect
- netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt - nothing happened
- restarting modem, computer, notebooks etc. - no effect
- checked & re-entered security key - no effect
- disabled firewall - no effect

Here's a copy of her ipconfig /all log:

Windows IP Configuration

She said she was just browsing the net when her internet disconnected so I'm also running a virus scan at the moment to see if there's anything interfering. Does anyone have any ideas what to I can do?
Does it sound like it's a problem with the D-Link adapter? She's had problems in the past with her wireless adapters failing...

Any help would be appreciated, thankyou.

Let's start with ...

(From a JohnWill post)

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2 or SP3.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Thankyou for your reply, TerryNet. I have done both of your suggestiongs, and nothing happened. I also tried switching the D-link adapter to a Belkin - no effect I then tried hooking up the modem directly into the laptop, and the internet connected immediately...? Any other suggestions on what I could do? Thanks again.

A curious thing is the default gateway specified there. Please reset ALL the DHCP parameters.

Select Start > Settings > Network Connections.
  • Double-click the Connection icon of the connection you wish to modify to open the Connection Status window.
  • Click the Properties button to open the Connection Properties window.
  • Click to highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
  • Click the Properties button to open the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.
  • TCP/IP Properties window, IP Address tab
  • Select Obtain an IP address automatically.
  • Select Obtain DNS server address automatically.
  • Click OK to return to the Local Area Connection Properties window.
  • Click OK to return to the Network Connections window.

Hi JohnWill, thankyou for your reply. The TCP/IP Properties was always set to automatically obtain. I tried to force a static one givien by our ISP, which gave full connectivity - I still could not load the internet. Both options are set back to automatic and still no luck

I also tried switching the D-link adapter to a Belkin
Is the Belkin also USB? Were the other adapters USB? It's beginning to sound like some kind of USB problem.

Do the D-Link and Belkin adapters work with another computer?
