Usb adapter
I have an Imac G4 with OS 10.4.11. It was bought in 2003 and is not wireless.
At present I am in Spain trying to get a WIFI connection. The company that provides WIFI told me that they cannot get a signal with the nearest wifi tower from my computer window. I must, they said, get what I suppose it a router that will allow my computer to communicate with the antenna some 40 feet away. But I must make my computer also wireless. The technicians tell me that I need what they call a booster - USB 2.4Ghz b,g NOT an n, and one that will fit a Mac or includes software to make it Mac-usable. I am having trouble finding it in local computer stores. Could you tell me where I might get such an 'adapter' or 'booster'?

Something like this:

http://www.macwireless.com/html/prod...rds/11nUSB.php

http://www.macwireless.com/html/prod...s/antennas.php

Cannot say I have used them though.

Costa Blanca MAC specialists:

GOOD LUCK

the wireless on the tower - its 2,4ghz 802.11 g hotspot - like you would get at airports and cafes etc - its not a 3G network mobile phone we are talking about

dont quite understand the need for a router ...... you may need to explain further

is there anything between the antenna and your computer?
just wondered how much open space - 40ft is not a huge distance

I have never used these - just an example of what you might be after - depending on what is between you and aerial

advertised increase range using the base ....

details
The provider is a company which provides WIFI service: it has "hotspots in a few places. one of them on a hillyop some 4 km or so from our apartment. Howeverour apartment is blocked by others around us. The techicians who came to install our antenna (receiver) could not get a good signal from our computerroom. They suggested that they could install their antenna on another outside wall and then through a modem (what I would think would be similar to Apple's airport) to our computer which would be some 40 feet from where the antenna would be attached. But since my G4 Imac (year 2003) is not wireless, they told me that I would need what they called a USB "booster" as described in my first message (2.4 Gzh b,g But NOT they sausd n, unless it was combined with b, g. (b,g,n). I cannot find such in local computer stores (oriented in Spain towards PCs). I think that h=what they are taking about is a USB adapter (like the one I have at home) that makes a non-wireless computer, wireless. But I am not sure.

Whats the name of the provider?

Have you phoned them to ask what model of 'USB booster' they are talking about? We are going to struggle to help you without some clues?

Can you install an Airport Extreme Wifi or for older machines an Airport (Original 802.11b). See 'EXPANSION CARD UPGRADES' on website below:

http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/m...p?name=imac-g4

OR as I said earlier this is a USB wireless adapter for MACs.

In effect that gives you a broadband connection, logically the same as having DSL or cable. You connect an ordinary wireless router to that and for your computer you need an ordinary wireless adapter that works with your computer. I don't understand why they are talking about a "booster" unless there are a lot of obstacles between the router and adapter locations.

If the price is not extremely different you may as well buy 'N,' but all 'N' devices are backward compatible with 'G.'

In the meantime i found a website: Afterthemac which has a usb wireless adapter for sale. The description is mac 802.11n, trafers up to 150mbps works with all 802.11n/g/b routers and any wifi hotspot. I will submit this to my provider (www. Vip-hotspot.com) and see if their technicians agree that it will work with their equivalent of an airport device. However i would have to order the adapter from the us since i can't find a place in southern spain (malaga province) that carries it. I wil just have to buy it in the us and wait until i return to spain to install the adapter on my imac and the wifi antenna.

Thank you all for your suggestions
