Ethernet switching & Networking
Sorry if this question is stupid but, I just bought an ethernet switch to plug in several pieces of electronics to the internet. My problem is this: I have a cable voice modem, wireless N router, video game console, BlueRay and PC and finally laptop. I would like to have all hooked up to the internet. I would like to have the gaming console and Blueray player hard wired to the internet with the PC and laptop working off the wireless N router. My problem is that when I hooked up the all in this sequence it did not work: cable voice modem-switch-(game console/blue ray to switch) wireless router to switch. I was able to get an internet connection throught the wireless router only. The game console and blueray could not connect. But when I plugged the switch through the wireless router everything worked. Please explain. I have the wireless router on fist floor of two story house and the cable voice modem and switch in the basement (to keep hard wire connections in the basement with only one wire leading into the office room for the wireless router.) Please help....!

Hi stromboli1025, and welcome to TSG.

The issue may be in the settings of the modem. Can you please let us know if the modem is configured as a router or is bridged? If it is configured as a router, please provide it's LAN configuration data for gateway address, subnet mask, if DHCP is enabled and DHCP range.

If the cable voice modem is just a modem and not a modem/router then the setup you have suggested will not work.. .
You would need to put the switch after the wireless router.

The modem/router was supplied by my cable company-Cablevision. I believe it is both(Modem/router). It is a Motorola Surfboard model SBV5222. The cable tech set it up through my computer, so I don't know how he set it up. How would I acess the modem to find out it's configuration settings?

I am not familiar with the Motorola modem. Someone else here may be able to answer that.

The wireless router settings may supply some of the information. With the wireless router connected to the modem, log into the administration screens of the router (you'll need to be plugged in the LAN port side if using a wired connection) and get the following settings for the WAN/Broadband side of the router:

Using static IP or DHCP?
Router address?
Gateway address?
Sub net mask?

You have a plain cable modem, You MUST connect the router only to the cable modem, then connect all the devices to the router. You only get one public IP address, that should go to the router.

The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.

Note that the wireless encryption and channel selection will have to be done after the basic wired connection is established, the first step is to get wired connections working.

  • Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on.
  • Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
  • Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
  • Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
  • Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
  • Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
  • Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous command output!

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
