My fiance had a router go out, so I had bought her a new one. I got it connected, and as I was beginning to set up the wireless devices, the wired PC lost connection. The router software shows the router connected to the internet, but the PC was not connected to the router. Any help you can provide will be appreciated. Let me know if you need any more data. The PC info is in my profile. I can post it here if it will be easier though. I've also already reset the TCP/IP stack and WINSOCK entries.

The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.

Note that the wireless encryption and channel selection will have to be done after the basic wired connection is established, the first step is to get wired connections working.

• Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on.
• Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
• Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
• Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
• Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
• Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
• Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

PING <computer_IP_address>

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2 or SP3.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

You might also want to insure these settings are correct.

Select Start > Settings > Network Connections.

• Double-click the Connection icon of the connection you wish to modify to open the Connection Status window.
• Click the Properties button to open the Connection Properties window.
• Click to highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
• Click the Properties button to open the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.
• TCP/IP Properties window, IP Address tab
• Select Obtain an IP address automatically.
• Select Obtain DNS server address automatically.
• Click OK to return to the Local Area Connection Properties window.
• Click OK to return to the Network Connections window.

Sorry guys. I've been busy. I did all that was asked and I get the same results. I did realize that I had typed an address without pinging it, but the results timed out. So no luck there anyway.

What's next? Also, I'm not sure if the router is actually resetting. If I could access it, I could see if it did or not. Power light doesn't flash, etc. Do you think I could just have a faulty router?

If you're following the instructions for that router for a reset to factory default settings and it is not doing it then you have a faulty router. If you don't have instructions on paper check the CD for a user manual, or get it from the Linksys site.

Alright guys. Problem solved. I don't know why I didn't think about this earlier, but I wired it to the laptop, and still couldn't see the router. Figured it had to be a bad router. Traded in for a NetGear and everything is working great.
