Solved: Can't Connect to internet- Local Access Only
I have seen multiple threads on this, but have not yet found the fix I need in any of them. I have had this Toshiba A505-S6960 Satellite laptop since September '09 and have never had any internet connectivity issues until last week. It came with Vista Home Premium 64-bit and I've used in my apartment and at my parent's house, and it has always automatically detected both networks and connected immediately.

Last week, I started getting "Local access only" when I connected at both my apartment and at my parent's house. I've clicked "Diagnose and Repair" and it says "Cannot communicate with Primary DNS Server(192.168.0.1)."

I have tried many fixes, including disabling IPv6, adjusting the DHCPBcast Flag in the registry editor, etc.
Nothing is working. I took it into Best Buy where I bought it and have an active warranty, and the Geek Squad connected to the Best Buy wireless network right in front of me and told it looks like its working and there's nothing they can really do.

Please help. Here is my ipconfig info:

you seem to have ICS setup
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes
I would take that off
whats the OS you have

you may have a firewall blocking - although it connects to other wireless OK

Do you have an encrypted wireless netwrok at home - if so
I would try removing all the wireless profiles
Wireless Profiles
- Vista:

http://www.tp-link.com/support/showfaq.asp?id=214
- delete the wireless profiles
Start
control Panel
classic view
network and sharing center
manage wireless networks

Delete the profiles
you will then have to enter the wireless security key for any networks you connect to
--

Wireless Profiles
- XP

http://www.tp-link.com/support/showfaq.asp?id=186
- delete the preferred networks
start
control panel
network connections
right click on the wireless connection listed
wireless networks tab
in the preferred network list
click on each one and - remove button

you will then have to enter the wireless security key for any networks you connect to
------------------------------------------------------------------------

If that does not work
also try logging into the router and removing the wireless security and see if you can connect now

I'm not sure what ICS is or how to disable it, but I was able to disable the IP Routing.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit.

It says my Windows Firewall is off.

I am at my parents house right now and they have unsecured network. I deleted it and then tried reconnecting, but it is still giving me local access only.

How do I log in to the router to remove wireless security?

you dont need to as

post back another ipconfig /all

also

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here
{Ping Tests}

Start> Run {search bar in Vista}> CMD to open a DOS window and type:

Type the following command
Ping google.com
Post back the results
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping 192.168.0.1
Post back the results
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping 209.191.93.53
post back results
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php
Then run the program
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

the ipconfig looks OK

your connected to the router and have an ip from the router
but cannot ping the router IP default gateway
It maybe a firewall blocking access - what firewall do you have - anything like norton subscription run out ?

it maybe worth switching the modem/router combination off and then switching each one on and allow to settle before the next, modem/router/pc in that order

Norton came pre-installed in my computer but I never activated it, and it is not showing as active on my task bar.

When I go to Network and Sharing Center>Windows Firewall, it says "Windows Firewall is off".

Running Xirrus now will post screenshot in a minute.

well the adapter can see the network and it says its connected .... plus you have had it working in a shop...

i'm at a bit of a loss now

have you tried switching everything off - as per earlier post?
might as well remove norton as your not using it with the removal tool

some things to try - not sure they will help - but just so you have a complete set before I switch off for the night

(From a JohnWill post)

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista.

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

-----------------------------------------
From a Johnwill post

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
  • COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
  • Computer Browser
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Connections
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper
  • Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations only)
  • WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations only)
  • Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing.

Problem started earlier this week, and I have shut my computer completely off every night.

Ran the TCP/IP stack repair, no change.

All of those services are started with startup type "Automatic".

This is frustrating, any other advices?

the bit that is getting to me is that it worked in the shop - but will NOT work on your or your parents wireless
you have switched on/off the modem/router etc
taken off any wireless profiles
removed norton

i'm at a bit of a lose - but I must go, so hopefully one of the network gurus will pick up over night as on different timezones

Just started in Safe Mode with Networking, it is still showing as Local Access Only and I'm unable to connect to internet.
