Hi.
I need help with my Mothers wireless DELL Dimension 2400 XP computer [2 gig ram].

Problem is that it does seem to pull an IP address BUT can NOT pull up web pages.


[AN ASIDE --> I have tried being specific and clear. I'm disabled but my Mom is almost 80. Who else is going to help Her? I am ill.Please be kind have a brain tumor about the size of a lemon .
. To say it effects me is an understatement,...,I have tried to do this correctly. I'm using the kindness of strangers approach because I'm desperate + You seem smart. If You don't know -:

The error message I get over 'N over again is : "The webpage is not available."
"The web page " ie google " might be temporarialy down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address."
More information on the error messages. "Below is the original message:"

ERROR 105 (NET: ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED) The server could not be found.

I tried two web browsers Google Chrome and MS Internet Explorer. AND two web pages Google and www.drudgereport.com.(booth with www and suffix).

While this is happening two other interesting things are happening:
(1) She gets a new e-mail for today. (2) Her connection shows that it's connected and running at 56k- which is what wireless home computers tend to do these days.

Her WIRELESS NETWORK CONNECTION PROPERTIES FOLLOW:

RALINK TURBO WIRELESS LAN CARD ON LYNKSYS CONNECTION. HER NET STACK IS:

CLIENT FOR MICROSOFT NETWORKS;
FILE AND PRINTER SHARING FOR MICROSOFT NETWORKS;
QOS PACKET SCHEDULER;
NWLink NetBIOS;
NWLink IPX/SPX NetBIOS Compatable Transport Protocol;
AEGIS PROTOCOL IIEEE 802.1 v 3.3.3.0;
TCP/IP (VERSION 4 + NOT 6)

Next her TCP/IP Settings "Properties" and "TABS" are set like so:

GENERAL TCP/IP settings :

(1) Obtain an IP address automatically.
(2) Obtain a DNS server address automatically.

UNDER "ADVANCED" button the 4 FOUR Tabs show for IP SETTINGS, DNS, WINS AND OPTIONS.



(1) IP SETTINGS TAB:

HAS DHCP ENABLED AND AUTO METRIC CHOSEN.

(2) THE DNS TAB:

HAS APPEND Primary and connection specific DNS suffixes (AND)

Append Parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix BOTH CHOSEN.

IT DOES NOT HAVE THE REST CHOSEN. THE PART ABOUT APPENDING THESE DNS SUFFIXES IN ORDER.

At the bottom of this DNS TAB the following are chosen-

(A) Register this connections address in DNS.[AND]
(B) Use this connections DNS suffix in DNS registration.


(3) THE WINS TAB SETTINGS:

(A) Enable LMHOSTS LOOKUP [checked]

(B) NetBIOS SETTINGS-- DEFAULT.-- Use NetBIOS settings from theDHCP Server. If Static IP
addresses are used or DNS Server does not provide NetBIOS settings-- enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
(is also choosen).

(4) OPTIONS TAB:

TCP/IP FILTERING [PROPERTIES TAB] HAS "Enable TCP/IP Filtering" on all adapters, Permit all.


I've tried a variety of things and just got a headache for the effort.

Are you sure about that number? 56k is a typical dial-up modem speed. 54m (54 megabits per second) is a typical wireless speed.

Please try the following two commands one at a time from the command prompt:

PING www.techguy.org

PING 209.183.226.152

If the first one errors out but the second one works, the problem is most likely in the DNS settings.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, each followed by the Enter key:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.
