Inspiron 1501 not communicating with DIR 615 router
Hi Guys and gals,

I have an Inspiron 1501 laptop with a Dell wireless 1390 WLAN mini card adaptor and cannot get it to communcate with my new D-link DIR 615 N series wireless router.

The wireless connection seemed to be established until I noticed a message within the toolbar telling me the laptops adaptor is not compatible with the router (plus I cannot get onto the internet - which does work when hard wired). I've had problems with trying to set this up over the past week, e.g. it keeps remembering the name of the wireless routers initial name??? Even though i've reset the router.... Tried disabling the network and wireless cards and even reinstalled but no joy.

The router has WPA-PSK AES/TKIP encryption and so does the wireless card.

Is it a case of replacing the network card or can I configure something on the laptop to avoid this.

I'm just trying to get a faster internal wireless network. Thinking of getting a hammer to the damn thing and switching on my old netgear router

Please help...if poss

Cheers

take the security off the router and try and connect
also remove the wireless profile - see at end of post

have you set up for the router to support a mixed range of adapters - G and N
if you have set to N only and the laptop is not N then you need to change the router setting to allow mixed

post back

------------------------------------------------------------------------
{run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector} Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php
Then run the program
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

you will then have to enter the wireless security key for any networks you connect to

you will then have to enter the wireless security key for any networks you connect to

Hi etaf,

I took the security off the router and removed the wireless profile from the laptop. The router was set up for 802.11 Mixed (n/g/b) so didn't need to mod. I then rebooted both router and laptop but could not see the my wireless router via laptop.... I think what it could see before was due to the installation disk (part of the process requires hardwiring) so it created the profile..

I did download the program you suggested but have not collected anything additional for you as it could not see my wireless router neither.

...............................

In addition to this I am trying to hook up my xBox 360. Yesterday when the router was encrypted connectivity looked fine on the settings (xBox) but on-line gameplay kept 'fracking' up. I 'tested' it today whilst the router has no security and gameplay is much faster. Do you or anyone else know what that's all about? Must be something to do with the encryption but I can't believe it can't handle WPA encryption..... Would it need some form of fireware upgrade that I could gain from microsoft or some kind of mod on the router (which would not interfeer with the laptop - once I get that running)?

Appreciate the advise.

did the program find the adapter ?

------------------------------------------------------------------------
{Device Manager}
Post back the results in device manager
Start > control Panel {Vista set to classic view}> system > {Vista, device manager on left hand side} {XP hardware Tab, device manager button} >
windows 7
start > control panel> System and Security> Device Manager

network adaptors, click on the + > post back the devices listed there
are there any ! ? or X

post a screen shot of the device manager - network adapters

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here

we can deal with the 360 once we have the laptop working

Pick the Networks page of the scanner and display all the wireless networks that are sensed around you, post a screen shot of that screen.

I know nothing about a lease seeing network or anything to do with 6 or 11.

Please keep in mind im having to switch the broadband router cable between my 2 wireless routers and there was hardwiring involved before.

I've attached screen shots of the wireless networks available (the screen shots were taken when netgear rounter was switched off and dlink on, their not the clearst to be fair as I cannot expand and show all in one shot plus whats available keep moving around). The new dlink is not on there but have noticed it intermittintly appears...., when it appeared I was going to try to connect but it went away . The dlink did not appear within Xirrus at any time. When I swiched off the netgear turned on the dlink and refreshed Xirrus it still didn't show up!

It's gotta be a hardware problem with the laptop?!?!?

sorry miss-typed lease should read least, meaning you are picking up network signals - please run xirrus again and click on the networks page link - top lefthand side - so we can see xirrus display all the networks

also can you fully explain how you have all the routers connected - you mention Netgear and Dlink

have you set the new d-link up correctly and is the wireless enabled and switched on ?

Not sure what is going on but i'll try to exaplain what i've done.

the cable router is connected to either Netgear or dlink via a a blue cat 5e. Netgear is the old router I want to discontinue.

Today i restarted everything (router, dlink and comp) and the dlink appeared on Xirrus (as you can see on the screen shot). Also, you can see on the screen shot the initial name I called the router when setting it up. Not sure why this keeps happening as it's just called dlink.

Tried to connect to the open dlink wireless and it came up with the other error message (as shown in screen shot). So I attached another cable which came with the router to resolve, disconnected the cable and was able to surf the web. Everything seemed fine so just to check I restarted the laptop and shock, no connection or limited connectivity after restart!!!

I recall that during the initial installation a problem occurred with the admin password and I think the machine is remembering what i did wrong and is punushing me for the mistake (I pressed cancel instead of entering a blank password). Is this something to do with old registery files or something. I know you shouldn'y mess with these files unless you really know what your doing. What i'd like to try is remove all and any registery related wireless files from the machine so I can start the process from scratch. last thing I want to do is a rebuild.

I'm confused as hell as to why it keeps remembering 'Dazzyboy" and that I did get an established internet connection but after a restart they are confused and unable to 'talk' properly to each other

I'd also do a couple other things.

Limit the router to a 20mhz channel, keeping it on channel 1.
Enable encryption at least WPA with a strong key.

Where's my last post gone? I updated and now can't see?????

Without going through it again i'm sure the problem is a hardware issue with the network card, but the error message in the attached isn't clear. Is there a tool out there that can check the compatability and advise a new type of card for this machine which will allow communication to the router?

Anyone know what I should do next?

I'm thinking of returning the router as im getting no where with it. Does someone know off a decent N-series router that will match my laptop and xBox 360 requirements?
