"Your DNS servers can't resolve the names of Xbox Live server or Xbox.com"
I have my ethernet cable plugged into my computer which has a network adapter to connect to a D-Link router in another room. I've bridged the LAN connection and the wireless connection. I'm trying to connect to Xbox Live with this setup and the following message occurs:

"Your DNS servers can't resolve the names of Xbox Live server or Xbox.com"

Any ideas?

I think this is something worth to mention.

When I un-bridge the connections. My wireless connection is enabled/connected and I can browse the internet just fine. But my local area connection is limited or no connectivity. I checked the properties and it only has an ip address and subnet mask listed. No DNS server, no default gateway.

Which version of Windows? Which flavor; home, home premium, pro, etc? 32 or 64 bit?

Which hardware; router, switch, network [ ethernet or wi fi, which ever you use ]? Have you tried the other?

Is your HOSTS file modified?
If you are running Vista, see http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hostsvista.htm

Windows XP Home

D-Link DGL-4300, router. I'm using a network adapter to connect to the router in another room.

I don't know what the HOSTS file is, so I'm guessing I've never touched it.

1. Please explain what you mean with bridged/unbridged wireless and wired. Is there some setting on your router that allows you to bridge between your built in wired switch and the built in wireless segment?

2. DNS shouldn't be an issue as long as you have your machines set to obtain DNS settings via DHCP or "obtain DNS automatically." This will allow the router's DHCP to pass through the DNS settings from your internet service provider.

Please give me the make and model of this router because I want to read something about this bridged/unbridged situation between the wired and wireless, it's possible that this is causing some pass through issues and preventing DHCP from passing through DNS information.

Sadly / Curiously, there are programs, to include malware, that will make changes to a HOSTS file.

Which XP service pack?

Which anti spyware; antivirus? Which firewall?

Go to your control panel.
Upper left, if necessary, set it to "classic view"
Open "network connections"
Provide us with a screen shot

RIGHT click the network connection you want to use.
Left click "properties"
In the area with white background, left click "tcp / ip"
Left click "properties"
Provide us with screen shots of the "general" tab & "alt configuration" tabs
On the "general" tab, left click "advanced" button.
Provide us with screen shots with each of the tabs.

Screen shot.
On your keyboard, look for a key labeled "print screen" OR "PrtSc" OR "PRN SCN" or some variation.
When you want to capture that which is displayed, press the print screen button.
Open Paint [ start > programs / all programs > accessories > paint [ rarely MS Paint]
Maximize Paint
left click "edit"
Left click "paste"
file > save as.
Save the file to any location of your choice.
File name: your choice, for example: "filename"
save as type: left click down pointing arrow. Left click jpg / jpeg
Left click "save" / "ok".

The file name has now been saved as filename.jpg [ or filename.jpeg ].

Return to the thread.
Left click "go advanced".

Left click "manage attachments"
left click "browse"
browse to the location, on your computer, where you saved "filename.jpg"
Left click filename.jpg
left click "open"
left click Upload"
close window of upload screen after the file has been uploaded.

enter text into the reply area.
left click "submit"

If there is information on the screen that you don't want to display, you can use the eraser [ looks like a bar of soap, left column, 2nd from the top. You can remove large areas by clicking on the dotted outline column button, top, right column, then drag your mouse while holding down left mouse button ] to surround that which you don't want displayed. Then, press "delete" on your keyboard. Then save.

OK so lets clarify.

You have 1 wired PC connected to this wireless gaming router. You also have xbox connected via the xbox wireless adapter. When you try to access Xbox live you cannot resolve DNS servers... this problem is occurring on your Xbox and not your PC, correct?

Are we troubleshooting an Xbox or PC problem, because as far as I know Xbox live is for the console only so we must be talking about an Xbox problem.

OK so this sounds like it is an Xbox problem and not a PC problem. This link describes a process to take when the Xbox platform spits out a ""Your DNS server can't resolve the names of the Xbox LIVE servers or Xbox.com.""

Basically it sounds like Xbox is not default configured to accept DNS addresses from your DHCP server aka your router. This is likely a 1 click solution. As I mentioned in a previous post, if your DHCP client is configured correctly your router will pass through the ISP's DNS without any configuration changes on your part.
