DHCP problem...I think
Hello,

I'm running Windows 7 and my computer has recently begun hanging immediately after starting. After extensive troubleshooting, I discovered that if I disable DHCP Client (via msconfig services) the computer works (although still a bit slower than normal), but I don't get internet access. If I enable DHCP Client and start up in safe mode with networking it seems to work fine.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

What do you have as the dependencies for DHCP Client?

Check this in services.msc

If you find disabling DHCP client works, then assign a static ip address to your computer and see if it truely works.

Austin,

Since I don't know what that means, here's what the Dependencies tab shows:

This service depends on the following system components:

Ancillary Function Driver for Winsock
NetIO Legacy TDI Support Driver
> TCP/IP Protocol Driver
Network Store Interface Service
> NSI proxy service driver

The following system components depend on this service:

WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service

Not sure how to do that. Might that change over time unless I pay more to the service provider for a static IP?

Ok, and all those dependencies were starting fine, right? Let's have you try a stack reset. Pull up a Command Prompt with Administrator Privileges and run these two commands:

netsh int ip reset reset.log

netsh winsock reset catalog

If that didn't work, could I trouble you for a HijackThis log?

No router. I do have an ActionTec Wireless DSL modem, if that matters.

How do I determine if the dependencies are starting properly?

I input netsh int ip reset reset.log and got this:

Reseting Global, OK!
Reseting Interface, OK!
Restart the computer to complete this action.

I restarted and noticed that it still hangs but if I leave it alone for at least an hour the computer will recover and seems to work normally.

I input netsh int winsock reset catalog and got this:

The following command was not found: int winsock reset catalog.

Austin,

I input netsh winsock reset catalog and it told me to restart, which I did, but it's still choking. I'm now waiting the hour or so for it to get unstuck to use it again. Using my laptop in the meantime.

Can you run sfc /SCANNOW

If it throws any errors, post the output. (You can right click in the command prompt and click Select All, then press enter and paste it into a post.)

Can I also enquire as to what if any security software you are/have used on this machine?
