connecting my desktop internet to my laptop
Ok,
I did by a new laptop about 3 weeks ago, its a lenovo G460 laptop, 4gigs ram, 320 GB HDD, Geforce 310M 512mb, windows 7 home premium. I was wondering if i could connect my desktop pc broadband cable to my laptop and surf. I did try to put in the cable in my laptop's ethernet port but the net wouldnt work despite it being connected (light would glow). I believe that there are a few settings you need to do on your lappy before you get going. My dad wouldn't buy me a router as of now... lol. Could somebody help me with these settings??

What version of Windows is on the machine that has the Internet connection? ICS is available for Vista and Windows 7 as well.

Take a look at this Microsoft ICS (Internet Connection Sharing tutorial.

FWIW, wired or wireless ICS would be configured in the same manner, but this may be more specific.

You shouldn't need the CD to configure ICS, I've configured it several times on XP systems without it.

The connected computer should be bog standard, just use a crossover cable to connect it to the laptop.

Let's see this from each of the machines with them configured and connected.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands.

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

That only looks like the ICS machine, and it's configuration isn't right for ICS, probably why it isn't working.

Disable ICS on that machine and then do this.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, each followed by the Enter key:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

Enable ICS again and post another IPCONFIG /ALL
