No network or internet access
Have Dell Demension 8400 Win Xp Home Media SP3.
Have Broadcom Netextreme 57 gigabyte controller as my NIC card.
Have RCA Cable modem and Leviton 4 port gateway. These have always worked just fine until now.

Has work just fine for several years. Before, when I would get message could not display web page because not connect to internet, I was always able to reset Router and Gateway and it found the IP address and was able then to go onto network and internet. Now I get zeroes for IP address and when I repair it, I am told could not repair.

I called Comcast and the support person went thru software settings and said my software was correct. We flushed stuff and renewed stuff at command prompt. Double checked Broadcom properties. All seem ok. Except when I tried to ping, I get "Cannot find host" message." Also with Comcast I got a "Can not find RPC Server". That is when Comcast suggested I contact Dell.

I went to Broadcom web site and created bootable ISO cd with diagnostics. I booted and ran diagnostics and everything that went by on screen read "Passed". I was thinking the NIC card went bad, but this seems to indicate it is still ok. Yet something is preventing it from working. I do not use Hibernate.

Unfortunetly, I had Restore turned off as I had a file that Norton Antivirus would not shut up about (very low risk file) but to get rid of it, I had to turn Resore off so it would not get backed up and trigger alerts again.

I used to get the network icon in my taskbar that would blink indicating it was connected to internet. Now the icon is the same solid color, right click says connected, but repair always fails. Not at all sure where to start troubleshooting.

I do reguarly use antivirus, antispyware programs and keep system cleam. Looking to suggestions. Maybe a recent software update caused problem? For example, Adobe third party update. Anybody heard of conflicts with NIC's?

Thanks for the suggestion. I was close to that idea as I went to Device Manager and Disabled and Enabled the NIC. I did Uninstall and let Windows XP reinstall on the reboot. That it did. However, I still get the same symptoms. Zeroes for IP address, no home network, no blinking network icon in taskbar. When I do status, it says connected, but when I repair, I still get could not repair because can not renew IP address message. I also went to CMD and typed "Ping www.yahoo.com" and still got the "host not found" message. I then reset the Router and Gateway and still get the same.

I have Windows Firewall turned off and Norton Smart Firewall turned off.

I did turn off Norton Smart Firewall and still get same results. The icon of the two computers on Taskbar says it is aquiring address all the time and the IP address is sstill zeroes. I will turn off again and reset router.

Turned off Norton Smart Firewall off and rebooted PC. Reset router and gateway and still get same results.

Thanks for the suggestions as I have no idea what to do.

I ran IE without Add-ons - same results.

I ran Network diagnostics for XP - get RPC server unavailable message and under HTTP Diagnostic section Server name or address can not be resolved.

STORMYDOG:

Click "Report" and then request to have your thread moved to the "Networking" section. There are some very knowledgeable people there who may be able to assist you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Go into the Device Manager, click the + in Display Adapters, then double-click the Broadcom entry to open its properties window, then click Details(tab).

Look for a string that has VEN_####&DEV_#### as part of it.

Advise what the 4 numbers and letters are that follow VEN_ and DEV_

----------------------------------------------------------------

Here are the driver download links for Broadcom NetXtreme and NetLink 57xx ethernet adapters:

http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethe...me_desktop.php

http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethe...etlink_k57.php

http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethe...ic/netlink.php

First, let's confirm exactly which ethernet adapter your computer has.

Flavallee:
I requested that this thread be moved to Network.

Under Device Manager->Network Adapters->Details->Device Instance id: PCI\VEN_14E4&VEN_1677. Also has SUBSYS_01771028&REV_01\4....

I am not sure where to find chipset number.

Huggie54:
I will read the link. I did quickly go to Services and Remote Procedure Call (RPC) was started and set to load automatically and Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator was set to start manually. I went ahead and changed that to start automatically. Rebooted and no change. But went back to the article and it said it was a different service. Not sure if it relates to my problem or not. So my problem is not like this on in that it was listed in Services. I will check out the Registry settings stated there.

I just checked and there is this regestry entry.

By the way, I use Registry Mechanic reguarly and keep my Registery compacted and corrected for errors it finds. I also use SuperAntoSpyware reguarly.

You made a typo. I think you meant to write down

VEN_14E4&DEV_1677

Those vendor and device codes identify the ethernet adapter as

Chip Number: BCM5751

Chip Description: NetXtreme Desktop/Mobile

Chip Number: BCM5782

Chip Description: Broadcom NetExtreme Gigabit Ethernet

Here is the Broadcom link for the ethernet adapter driver for those chipset numbers

This is dangerous and unnecessary practice. It'll do nothing to improve speed or performance. What it will do is break programs and damage the operating system.

I will download the drivers and see about installing them. You are suggesting that a fresh install will correct a possibly corrupt file?

I never suggested that you do a fresh install of anything. What exactly are you referring to?

Sorry for my confusion.

I was referring to downloading the Broadcom Zip file you linked me to and seeing about a fresh install of those drivers. I have not as yet looked in the Zip file and do not know what is there, but assumed it was newest drivers that you wanted to be installed.

Are you using automatic IP or manual, check that please.
If automatic make sure "use the following Ip addresses is not checked in the TCP/IP settings of the network adaptor.

Let's start with a stack reset.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, each followed by the Enter key:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

Next, using a wired connection, I'd like to see this connected to the router.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

To HighSpeed:
When going into Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties in Control Panel->Network, I have always had Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically selected.

To JohnWill:
Attached is a file configall.txt with the results requested. I remember going thru several similar commands with COMCAST (my ISP) and it never accomplished anything then either.

I do appreciate all attempts in helping me get to the cause of this problem. I realize how difficult it is to diagnose thru this, or any other similar forum, and am very eager to try just about anything. I am pretty proficient with doing diagnosis on a computer.
