Solved: Connecting my laptop to my router
I have a Linksys router Model #WRT54GS version 6. Since its setup my laptop always connected to the original SSID which i created when I first bought and setup the router. That SSID name is George-network, but now I notice I am connected to linksys (automatic) which is an unsecure connection. Why won't it connect to the original SSID? Is linksys (automatic) the default for the router?

I right clicked the computer in the lower right hand corner, then properties, then wireless networks, and then preferred networks in the list there are 5 listed:

George-network (automatic) This is the original
George-network-2 (automatic) This one I believe I created by accident lol
Default (automatic)
Linksys (automatic) The one my laptop is currently connecting to which is unsecure
Coastal (automatic)

All of the above have a little man like icon with a red "X" on them except linksys (automatic), and are in this order, but will only connect to the "linksys (automatic)" which again is unsecure. Why am I unable to hook up to George-network like it always had before.

By the way i am using a Gateway with windowsxp.

Also in the last month I have had 2 pretty bad power outages and also had to turn off the modem and router, and unhook the cable running between the modem and router. I read that a power surge could cause the routers settings to change to the routers default settings.

Thanks for any help.

why not delete the ones you dont need?
Your router may have reset it self. Can you access the routers home page?

Remove all the stored wireless network profiles and search for the network again. Here's How to Remove Stored Wireless Network Profiles for XP, Vista, and Windows 7

Thanks for your reply Johnwill.

I did try deleting them through the preferred networks. I right clicked the computer icon in the lower right hand corner, then properties, then wireless networks, and then preferred networks. They come right back. If i delete all of them but my original network and it doesnt connect to it wont i lose my connection to my laptop?

I can access my routers home page.

I noticed under the support tab on the "Wireless Network Connection Status" my IP address is 192.168.1.101, but under "basic setup" on my routers page it says my "Local IP Adress" is 192.168.1.1. I thought i read that might be a problem.

Also on the routers home page under the "Wireless" tab it says "Status: (SES) Inactive". I'm not sure if i should "Reset Security" or not.

Thank you.

I fixed it. Just bought a new router lol. It was strange though that i had nothing on my base unit related to linksys. Nothing in programs or anything. I do now and i'm secure again.

Thanks for the help.
