Unhappy There may be a problem with your Domain Name Server (DNS) configuration
Hello,

I'm having troubles with my internet, I can connect to the network. It say's 'local only' and there's a big red X leading to the internet symbol. The signal strength is excellent and my mother who also uses the same wireless connection for her netbook is able to use the internet whereas I can't.

My internet was working fine yesterday and now it's just stopped, I have tried all sorts, making sure all the wires are connected and everything but still no luck. My laptop is an inspiron 1545 and runs on windows vista.

When I click on the diagnose button it comes up with the following message:

There may be a problem with your Domain Name Server (DNS). Window's failed to find the well known host "www.microsoft.com" using DNS. The server may be down.

Please help, I have no clue what to do, I'm no expert at computers and I really need to get my coursework done.

Thanks in advance.

Please try to connect by both ethernet and wireless and show ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Some very puzzling aspects to that. Please describe your network--brand and model of modem and router, any other networking devices, etc. Are you using WinProxy on a computer?

The Media disconnected for the ethernet implies a defect with the NIC, the cable, or whatever is at the other end of the cable.
