Nothing except Firefox and IE can connect to the internet
Hi,

Since yesterday I haven't been able to connect to the internet with any programs on my PC other than Firefox and Internet Explorer. No other programs such as Google Chrome, Yahoo Messenger, Live messenger, games etc. can connect.
My OS is XP and have McAfee installed - a scan returned no results. I've tried disabling both McAfee's firewall as well as Windows firewall, despite the fact I have the programs on both exception lists, and the problem persists.
Also: around the same time I began getting the error message 'Microsoft Library Component has encountered a problem and needs to close,' every time my PC boots up. I don't know if the problems are related.

Any suggestions appreciated, thanks

After making sure you have your subscription information, uninstall McAfee and run the Removal Tool. You can reinstall it after testing.

Ok, I have uninstalled McAfee and run the removal tool, what should I do next? (the problem is still there)

First, try a stack repair.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, each followed by the Enter key:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

Next, try an SFC run: SFC Tutorial

I tried both of the above, but neither seems to have had any effect

Did the SFC complete without errors?

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
  1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
  2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
  3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

It would be best if you could post a screen shot of Device Manager with the Network adapters and Other devices sections expanded.

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

I'd like to see this as well.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Thanks for taking the time to help and the clear instructions!

Yeah the SFC completed without any errors.

There were no other devices in Device Manager with the symbols '?,! or X', other than the two under 'Other Devices' seen in the screenshot attached.

The results from the IPCONFIG /ALL command:

Looks like you're missing drivers, but not for anything that should affect networking.

Please post a HijackThis (current version) Log here.

Is this a company computer? Or one that you bought used from a company that was upgrading?

Or are you running on a company or college type network that may want to restrict some usage?

In Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services - look for any services that seem suspicious or that could be left over from some type of firewall or other security application. If there are any that are running, you can Stop them for a test. In particular, if they are there and running I'd stop nProtect GameGuard and SupportSoft RemoteAssist.

The SupportSoft service was running - after stopping there didn't seem to be any change. I then stopped any services that didn't seem necessary - still no luck..
