I have a dell latitude d600 laptop running on windows xp home edition. We are using a small office network with y computers connect the laptop being the third and I am connected via wireless connection. I can connect to our network printer and the other 3 computers without a problem but I cannot go ontothe internet. I have an ip address 10.0:0:9 which is within our LAN range and my subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. I cannot also setup outlook and if I ping sites like google .com I get the reply 'could not find host' can somebody help please

can we see a ipconfig /all from a working PC that is attached to the interent

I'm assuming this setup should allow full internet access - do you have a firewall on the PC that may be blocking - like norton, mcafee

can you connect the machine to the router by cable and see if that works ok

------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste
------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

Start> Run {search bar in Vista}> CMD to open a DOS window and type:

Type the following command
Ping 10.0.0.2
Post back the results
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping google.com
Post back the results
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Type the following command
Ping 209.183.226.152
post back results
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

that looks like a DNS issue , but also a flacky connection

The IP address your pinging is for this website - which seems to work the majority of the time

Lets start with the DNS issue and see if we put google open DNS IP servers onto the PC if that allows you to ping google at all

Heres the information for google open dns servers http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/ and how to configure the ip address on your PC theres a lnk on the page to here http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using.html

Once we get google working we can then look at the flacky pings

so the open DNS worked

The flacky connection may require a driver update to the network adapter

can you post the service TAG from the laptop - should be on the pc somewhere http://support.dell.com/support/topi...=us&l=en&s=dhs

also try the following

PING -T google.com

that will continue to reply until a
Control Key and C key is pressed together

see if there are any dropouts now
