Is there a chance those are Orchard Mason Bees (not flies) ?
Look at Google images for mason bees
Maybe you have some useful criters and not just scavengers.

they were definitely some kind of fly...they were basking together on an oak tree.

nice macro of the bee vreyens, is she on a lavender flower?, one sweet smelling bee if she is

A macro lens is the next lens I'm going to purchase for my camera, then I can get these smaller critters and wildflowers also rather than having them lost in the bigger picture.

Oh yeah, What did the mother bee say to the baby bee? Beehive yourself
