Cooch
Well here after great demand is Cooch, our beautiful nearly 12 year old Border Collie
He is just the most gorgeous dog, and the most obedient we have ever had, except for when I was trying to take these photos, he didn't want to sit still for me or smile!!! I told him who they were for and he still wasn't impressed He has just had his course of arthritis injections for the winter and when I can (which I try to do every day) we walk for 3km, so he is going very well for his age.

Went to a wedding at Crystal Brook last weekend and saw this "Goanna" just on the outskirts of the town! Also went 'up the river' this week, didn't realise the Turtle was with the Pelican until I put the pics on the computer, it is heavily cropped.

Hi Oceanna, Ive never heard of Goannas before so I looked them up and read this below,so how come you were able to get that, whatever it is on him/her just wondered

Like most native fauna, goannas are rather wary of human intrusions into their habitat, and will most likely run away (into the scrub, up a tree, or into the water, depending on the species). A goanna is a rather swift mover, and when pressed will sprint short distances on its hind legs.

Goannas also rear up when threatened, either chased or cornered, and also inflate flaps of skin around their throats and emit a harsh hissing noise.

Some goannas recover from their initial fear of humans, especially when food is involved (or food has been involved previously). This reinforces the wildlife authority's mantra of not feeding animals while camping or erstwhile adventuring. This said, most authorities doubt that a goanna will actually direct an intentional attack on human unless said human attempts to attack it (or grasp at it) first. Aborigines who hunt goannas for food consider the Perentie as a high-risk (but tasty) prey.

The debate whether goannas are venomous or not is growing. Previously it was thought that incessant bleeding caused by goanna-bites were the result of bacterial infection. Recent studies[2] suggest that monitor lizards (including goannas) are venomous and have oral toxin-producing glands.

Other dangers a goanna presents is from its hefty tail. It can swing this much like a crocodile if cornered. Small children and dogs have been knocked down by such attacks. Often victims in goanna attacks are bystanders, watching the person antagonising the goanna. Alarmed goannas can mistake standing humans for trees and attempt to climb off the ground to safety, which is understandably painful, as well as distressing for both man and beast.

It should be noted that goannas are a protected species throughout Australia

I hadn't heard of it before either Pat, so I did a bit of a search and found this article:-

The Big Goanna
Trying to attract tourists off the main Highway 1, Crystal Brook used the standard Australian device of creating a 'Big' object at the entry to the town. It was the Big Tree Goanna. The sign read 'Varanus varius, vulnerable species native to this area. This goanna is depicted in an aggressive pose. Goannas and other reptiles can be seen at Bowman Park which is located near Crystal Brook. Constructed and erected by local voluntary labour for the benefit of our district.' It is sad comment on human beings that the statue was vandalised. It has recently been restored. It has had a rather chequered career.

There is a picture on the link of it in a different location (I think).
