#16 | Thank you for your nice comments.....We had a long dry spell in April which brought the flowers on nicely but now when they are about to open we have had a lot of heavy showers and I thought my white clematis would be brown and ragged this year....but she has decided to be better than ever........hope you like her........
I do grow other things as well as Clematis!!!!
kind regards......Margaret | | Distinguished Member with 13,979 posts. | | Join Date: Sep 2004 Location: Melbourne, Vic., Australia Experience: Intermediate |

#17 | More beautiful Clematis shots Margaret,
I haven't tried growing them, I don't think I have the room or the right spot for them now & the drought has made us go for more drought tolerant plants in future. | | Senior Member with 264 posts. | | Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: south of England Experience: Beginner |

#18 | Don't give up on the clematis........we had the driest summer ever in our part of England last year but they survived better than most. I grow them up trees, obelisks, conifers - you name it up they go! The secret is to plant them deep as they like their heads in the sun but roots in the shade......I put a lot of old newspapers in the bottom of the hole water them well and add a few water retaining granules to the soil when I backfill the hole......then they take their chance! If you start with Etoile Violette which is a late flower type it is rampant and all you do is cut it down to about 18 inches in the early spring (although I often do it in late November as they can look a bit untidy and anyway they grow up my winter flowering viburnum). They will also run along the border under the shrubs and grab hold of any available 'host' to pop up with their flowers.
I have some relatives in Brisbane who got fed up with me going on about them and now they are as hooked on them as I am........

#23 | The climbing rose Albertine is spreading it's perfume throughout the garden at the moment and it is a pleasure to sit outside in the evening and enjoy it.

#26 | We have had heavy rain since Sunday and the roses in particular have been battered but the hosta's and hydrangeas instead have revelled in it. Luckily the first bloom on a newly planted climber was protected by the climbing hydrangea - only a tiny flower but putting up bravely with the weather which promises well for the future!

#29 | The roses are still in bloom but the good old fashioned flowers are coming out again - the Lambs Ears, the Stocks and the Petunias. The dwarf Philadelphus has also decided to bloom and is adding to the perfume which for me makes June the best month in the garden year - until July when the Sweet Peas etc. bloom and I change my mind!
Just hope the forecast storms don't ruin the show....... regards Margaret | | Distinguished Member with 66,590 posts. | | Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: California Experience: Intermediate |
