Yes , the slats were never used by the western designers.
In Russia , they were . The Yakolev aircraft have used them for a long time, all they way back to WW-2.
I think because of extreme cold conditions --they would allow rapid warm-up of engine.
I am posting a couple of photos. Hope you find them interesting!.
Thanks for the thread , I enjoy your photos! >f

>f feel free to post something any time you want. No cloud pics though unless they have a plane in 'em.

If 3CP used the slats then it makes sense to me why the Chinese did as well. Thanks for the info.

I'm off to hang out at the airport now so lets see what I come up with today. Maybe I'll get lucky with a few more older birds again.

This aircraft is a real beauty and considered " The Workhorse of the North ". Along with the canoe but considerably later it played a big part in opening up the northern remotest areas of Canada as well as Alaska. This machine is in pristine condition and is a sight to see. Notice the " balloon " tires. They are used as the plane is capable of landing on un-developed strips of " whatever " and it keeps the plane from sinking in the dirt, mud, sand etc.

It is a 1958 Dehavilland DHC-2 MK.I

I'm posting this because there is a bit of a story that goes with it. If you look closley you will see a very small trailer just to the left and behind the garden tractor. This pilot came wizzing in and without doing even a short hover set the chopper down on said trailer. That trailer is barely larger than the skids and it was quite the sight to see.

It's a 1973 Hughes 369HS

That is one of truly GREAT planes !.
Many people go crazy over the well known aircraft--jets and pretty stuff --but these are truly classics --and most capable machines , I was never so lucky as to have flown one --or even in one.
Owning one --flying one --is one of my dreams !--I have lots of dreams !
Great photos of a truly great aircraft .
Thanks Guyzer. >f

This looks like a modified J3 Cub to me because it has many similarities. It's possible that the builder used J3 plans and built it from the ground up. The basic fuselage is the same but it's obvious the builder has changed the landing gear, wings as well as installed a beautiful engine and polished cowl behind it. It was very nicely finished and a joy to watch. In any event Transport Canada has it listed as a homebuilt and it was registered this spring. It's registered name is a " Mears Mk.I ".... named after the builder.

I'm not one for taking pics of commercial aircraft but there is an airshow coming up this weekend I might take in so I thought I would crank off a few just for practice. Things were going fairly well until I got home and discovered I had my ISO set at 500 due to some dark shooting a few days ago. I guess I should have checked it while I was out.....

Here's a few shots of two very neat looking aircraft. They both had a fantastic mirror finish to them. Must be a hoot to fly in. I even took the time to ensure my settings were correct.

Nice photos of a Aeronca 7ac. That one is someones baby!.
The "air-knocker" as people used to call them , were fun to fly, not a Cub , but almost!.
The first aircraft that I really flew and soloed in was a 7AC --- 65 hp -- and hand prop to start!.
The ones I flew were ....rough ...and treated rough. We operated on levees --fields --where ever . Hardly hit a runway.
I have attached the only scan I have from those days , the 60's..
A rough photo , and a rough plane , but it was the one I soloed in so I thought I would post. >f

I'm glad you posted it and feel free to do so any time you want.

Here's a few I took yesterday. The Abbotsford Airshow is taking place this weekend and I sat around the airport before going to work yesterday afternoon just to watch some of the stuff coming in for it. I think it paid off because I love the shot of the 1942 AT-6 I got. The view of the sky changed in every direction and it made for some interesting effects.

I also got a shot of a 1962 Fouga CM 170 MAGISTER which is a plane I have never seen before. It was interesting to say the least.

I doubt I'll go to the show because it's gone downhill over that last bunch of years but who knows how I'll feel when I drag my butt out of the rack.

Hope you enjoy..............

Beautiful photos ! . I esp like the Harvard - T-6 photos -- a joy to fly !.
Regarding the Cessna Skymaster photo ---looks like a O-2 Skymaster -- a FAC {forward air controller} version. Some were armed , as well as fired smoke for incoming attack aircraft. They were in use in Viet- Nam , and were replaced by the OV-10.
Interesting because they are fine low altitude traffic watchers over cities ect. They have excellent safety record --easy to fly on one engine and --much cheaper to operate than helios.
Thanks again ! I always enjoy the photos and your ability to take them !. I check your thread all the time --hoping for more ! >f
