black bear tagging
Had a DEC crew come out and tag a bear on my farm. local scouts and school kids had a half day off to participate. was very interesting to watch. bear weighed 275 lbs. and was about 4 years old. this is not the BIG one who was in there 2 years ago. he would go easily 500+. Bill

a few more pics
these are some shots of the den.removing a tooth to check age, tattooing his gum with the tag #.as far as we could get him back in and a face shot. It warmed up to 60 degrees over the weekend and he is now up and traveling around. He has raided my deer feeder and crapped in my lane last night. He drives the dogs nuts when he beats on the tin roof of the feeder. we have been watching him since we were building this farm 2 years ago. He is the only bear I ever saw take a bath in the water hole I dug in the pasture.

A little update on the bear. He came back the other evening and raided the steel can on the porch. Flipped it over and toted off an almost full bag of bird feed, carried it across the lane about 90 yards and sat on the edge of the hay field and had a party. I had taken the feeders down but forgot about the bag in the barrel. We have been seeing him out in the fields eating alfalfa for the past 2 weeks. Just put some feeder cows in the pasture so the fencer is back on. He will be surprised when he tries to climb between the wires and gets shocked.

Another update on the bear we tagged this spring. he was back and raided the feeder again. I caught a pic of him running off with an ear of corn in his mouth. If you look at his ear you can see the tag we put in this spring. Then he was in the pasture till the steers saw him and ran him off. The black steer is real possessive about his pasture. Neighbor has seen the big one right on the end of my back field twice this weekend . They are busy eating up for hibernation right now.

New Hampshire’s bear hunting season comes to a close on November 24. The season across the majority of the state has ended, however, the White Mountains region remains open to bear hunting through November 24. As of November 2, a total of 708 bears had been registered by hunters in the state. Bait hunters harvested 370 bears; still hunters/stalkers had taken 256 bears; and hound hunters had registered 82 bears. So far, this year’s bear harvest is 48% above the 5-year in-season average of 477 bears for this time period. Fish and Game bear biologist Andy Timmins estimates that this year’s bear harvest will be the second highest in history. (The current record harvest of 803 bears was achieved in 2003.) Recent reports indicate that deer hunters have been taking a fair number of bears while deer hunting. Hunters have been encountering bears mostly in oak stands where acorns remain available in some locations.
