Oxford
Hello, everyon.

I visited Oxford yesterday and am in the process of uploading photos to Webshots. Magdalen College (pronounced Mawdlin) was beautiful and I thought you might like to see this photo. the College is set in extensive grounds, including a deer park and meadows with a woodland walk - full of spring flowers. We also visited the Oxford Botanical Gardens where there's a tree which is a favourite of the author Tolkein - photo of this, a Pinus Nigra, or Black Pine.

Thank, Yvonne. Pleased you enjoyed them. The album is at Webshots now. I watched "Lewis" on TV last night and it began with a scene of exactly where we walked on Saturday in Magdalen College grounds.

Two yeas ago I visited Oxford for the first time, last year I was in Cambridge (also first time). I was struck by a major difference.

In Oxford, the universities tend to congregate together and walking among them I had an amazing feeling of "intelligence in the air". I was high with the knowledge that some of the world's greatest minds had walked on the same piece of earth as I was.

In Cambridge the architecture is generally more impressive than in Oxford, but I had no similar feeling. Perhaps I had exhausted that feeling in Oxford. I'm going back to Oxford this year and will see if the feeling was just a one-off.

By the way, as a city - I prefered Cambridge.

Oxford vs Cambrdge - No Contest.........

Having lived in one and visted to the other I realised that Cambridge isn't just a University Town and there are heaps of other things going on that are nothing to do with Academia. Oxford just seemed like one huge Campus - with lots of twee Signs saying "College this or Library that" and not much else. This makes Cambridge a rather more real City than the other University Town, and also - while Oxford has its rather effected Film Set of a City it has one of the most run-down Council Estates you'll ever see - but the Cloister Squad would rather you didn't.

Oxford was also the Royalist 'Capital' during the Civil Wars!

Cambridge also has a Magdelene College by the way - I know someone who studied there!

Pink Floyd vs Radiohead/Supergrass? Also no Contest!

Tolkien? Hmmm - and then Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema get their grubby Industry Mitts on it and what might have been a once loved Story for free spirited People has become as tacky and manipulative as Gaz and his irritatingly Retrograd Mutton chops Group!
