A wave in the ocean is pushing the air in front of it up.

Have you ever watched the Pelicans dive into the trough just in front of a wave and accelerate while they are there.

Since the air is being pushed up … They are actually diving and accelerating while flying level.

Then they will climb out .. find another wave and repeat the procedure.
I’ve watched them fly for hours and almost never flap their wings.

They also like to hang almost motionless on a rising air current that may be caused by a building.
It does look like they are Pasted there.

They are indeed very impressive photos Pat,as yours always are, thanks for sharing them with us

It is a miracle how they stay up there without moving, and Noyb gave a very good explanation as to how they do that ....its also a wonder how the real flying fortresses stayed up there considering what they were carrying,I remember them well

I thought of a large sea faring bird holding them in its gizzard.

This Pelican was Pestering me one day, and I had a few extra fish that I really wasn't in the mood to clean.

I fed him two rather large fish .. and he still acted like wanted more, so I fed him a third.
It took awhile for Number 3 to finally slither down his throat .. then …
He took off running down the beach, and into the Ocean .. but just couldn't get off the ground ... too much baggage.

So he just stood there the rest of the evening looking like he was in Misery.
He was quite a hit with all the Beach Walkers .. And after a couple of hours we had to leave.
My sides was hurting from all the laughing.

I was told that the Beach Patrol showed up later and checked him out.

The next morning, “Greedy” was gone .. And there was no evidence of the huge meal that Grounded him.
High tide that night.

It helps to be a Glider pilot to understand how one can stay airborne without flapping your wings.

Sorry if I’m Hijacking bygums’s post, But here’s another Pelican story I’ve got to tell.

Usually, the Pelicans would show up at the fish cleaning station when it was busy.
One day .. There was this Pelican that was limping really bad … and I felt sorry for him.
So I made sure he got fed really good and his buddies didn’t steal his food.

The next day I was out on the deck .. And “Pete” came limping up to me.
So I grabbed a pole .. And caught him some dinner.

When Pete would see me out and about .. He would swim over and start limping around till he was fed.

This went on for several days ..
There I would stand with a pole in my hand and Pete standing right beside me watching.
And if I didn’t catch something fast enough .. I would get bit on the leg.

The Condo residents thought this was a Riot .. And it became daily entertainment.
Because the only time “Pete” would start limping and put on a sympathy act …
Was when he saw me ..

One day, Pete just didn’t show up any more … and I kinda missed him.
My neighbors were telling me to quit worrying about him ….
He probably just found a better fisherman to Con.

Are Pelicans really that smart ???
