What is the name of this animal?
I took a picture of this cute little thing, but have no idea, what it is called. It made a large hole in the ground and disappears there when you approach but sometimes he just stares at me and doesn't move.
It goes on the lawn and feeds on grass I think, when I move far away.
Hopefully someone can tell me what this is so I can find out more about it.
thanks

no killer chipmunk, BM,

Yes, it looks like a groundhog, but I guess I was thinking of the big white groundhog for Groundhog Day, so I looked at hedgehogs. But hedgehogs look different.

thanks everyone.

that critter looks to be a little bit on the small side, this late in the year, to be a groundhog. They can get/usually are MUCH larger, (like a big cat) and this close to hibernation time, that is a very small groundhog. It looks more like what we used to call in Alaska, a Parka squirrel, They live in the ground also, and act much like what you are describing. They are also found in North America.
