How do you get a job these days?

I find it hard to advise anyone with so little personal information. My advise to a 17 year-old dropout would be significantly different then to a 25 year-old recently released from prison.
I would suggest that computer related jobs are now so overwhelmed with talent that opertunity is far better for manual skills like welding or drafting.

To your manual skills point...I saw a special on the news regarding how immigrant laws in Alabama have hurt the tomato industry. Good workers can make 300+/day picking tomatoes. It's back breaking work, but the harder you work, the more you earn.
