BIO-encryption or very good passwords with 128bit and higher encryption is better.
I found the articles, well I found articles that address the issue(s). It's the encryption certificate. If you leave it on the system, a knowlageable person can use it to decrypt your files. So a safe thing to do is to remove the certificate and keep it backed up with seperate encryption software. So if you frequent-use EFS files on your system, and have a seperate encrytion program [pgp for example]; then use the encryption program to encrypt the certificate.

Using Windows EFS (Encrypted File System)

I view people that commit this crime as badly as I view child sex offenders! Getting arrested for a crime that I didn't commit, hindering my employment, etc! I still have fears of the FBI, ATF, and local police banging down my door thinking I am a harden criminal. Like the guy on the news I am reduced to detailed documenation. Why, because what might happen is that even though I filed a police report, filed a report with the federal government, applied for certified passport records, and have notarized letters sent via certified mail, I'll still have problems!

Ex-NYC cop arrested on identity theft charge

LOl, that is my leading theory about how my identity was stolen. At school, because it happened around the same time I registered for class. Sad that a former law enforcement officer would go so low; I wonder if the people victimize can get the money they lost out of his pension? I think it would be fare.

Hope he gets a looooooooong sentence. I get irritated because it would be so convenient for me to pay my bills on-line, but because of these incidents I get paranoid. I will just stick with mailing checks. You even have to be careful of which ATM you use! And watch when your CC is used to be sure it's not getting that extra swipe!! Disgusting!

Your mail can be read as well before, during, or after transport. Your job, which has much of your personal information, can be compromised. The simple fact is that grand larceny, predates identity theft. Identity theft is merely a step up in execution.

So you are not safe, you are minutely safer. Your data is floating around in a data base, a file cabinet, etc. Remember that a driver abstract, registration abstract, criminal history, etc. All are public record. Have you ever lost your passport? Do you shread your mail? Did you erase your hard drive after selling or throwing out you computer? Did you erase that CDR/CDRW/DVDR/DVDRW disk? The list go on and on and on.

I put no personal info in my email, like my full name. I don't have a passport. My old computer.. I donated to the church and I know they erased the hard drive. And I shred. I get so tired of tearing my name and address off mail. I am on the no junk mail list and it is time for me to renew with them. It does help. I try, and so far I have been lucky.

LOL, I used to do the same thing with paper. I got sick of spending 2 hours tearing off my name and address. It was so **** time consuming. However, I do plan on buying a new shredder. I erase any recording media (CDs or DVDs) I use and get worn out. Then, I physically damage them so the data is absolutely unretrievable.

You are doing a lot and thus far may have simply been overlooked, good for you. However you still exist in many data bases. Do you have state issued ID; you probably do? I have many email addresses. One I use for "profeesional correspondance." However, the format of my name can be revieling, but I use it for work and job applications. Some I use for personal use. Others I use for family and friends.

Well you are trying and that is the important thing. Just remember your identity can be picked up tomorrow by an ex-con who decideds to come out of retirement. Also, many instances of identity theft are from those who are close to you? Do you have a safe? Can you recommend one? I want to buy one. Granted a safe can be compromised, but the point about encyrption, safes, and stuff is to make it as difficult as possible for somebody to compromise you. You're hopes is that they will look you over and say "naa this guy/gal is too hard. I'll move on to an easier target." Same thing applies to multiple situations.

Win2k Boot Disc Can Bypass Windows XP Passwords
http://netsecurity.about.com/cs/wind.../aa112103c.htm

http://linux.about.com/library/docs/...ecuredata3.htm

This fits into identity theft. Why? Laptops, government, corperations, laptops. Fools who know they company has security, but made no attempt to follow them. I'll be posting links about it soon. First I have to dig up all those articles again. There is probably a patch out already, but many companies don't keep their windows patches up to to date in part because it may mess up other security measures. We all know about security and microsoft patches lol.

I don't have a safe, so can't recommend one. I have a small shredder I really like but may buy a larger one. I also have a PO Box. I have some mail sent to that. For instance, if I buy jewelry on TV, I have it shipped there. I don't like my home address all over the world. And I don't list my whole name in the phone book. Sounds paranoid, but I don't want to go thru identity theft hell! PS, I also destroy old CDs. I learned that when I worked for DOD.

Just spent an hour of my time shredding name and address torn off received mail.

Of course I do it while watching TV. That eases the irritation.
