New arrest deepens mystery in Holloway case
Aruba police mum on connection between arrest and missing American teen

Updated: 9:01 a.m. ET April 17, 2006

ORANJESTAD, Aruba - An announcement that police made an arrest in the disappearance of teenager Natalee Holloway left many islanders wondering Sunday who the suspect is — and whether the arrest marked a real breakthrough in the almost year-old case.

Aruban authorities would only say late Saturday that the person arrested is 19 years old and has the initials “G.V.C.” In Aruba, when an arrest is announced, officials usually release only a suspect’s initials.

Holloway’s father, Dave Holloway, said Sunday he has been informed of the arrested person’s identity but did not recognize the name.

“We’re hopeful that something will come out of it,” Holloway told CNN.

ORANJESTAD, Aruba — An alleged Aruban police report detailing a secretly recorded conversation among suspects jailed in the Natalee Holloway case points to knowledge of a crime.

The report, handed out to the media in Aruba by an independent American investigator, detailed a conversation among Joran van der Sloot and the Kalpoe brothers — Deepak and Satish — secretly taped while the three were in custody in the back of a police car.

On the tape the three suspects, who were taken into custody and later released in the case of an Alabama honors student who disappeared while on vacation in Aruba on May 30, talk about their fate, mentioning the possibility of a long jail term if they are discovered.

Aruban authorities have yet to confirm the authenticity of the report, but a person in the prosecutor's office who requested anonymity said it "looks real."

Excerpts of the report, in which the suspects are identified by the initials of their first names, follow:

D says to J: "They're going to give you 15 years if they find the girl."

J says to D: "For what, for what?"

D says to J: "The scholarship of yours, you can forget it."

J says to D: "You well know that you did bad, otherwise you wouldn't lie.

In a later exchange, the suspects talk of burying Holloway's body.

J says to D: "I will laugh if they find the girl, f*** you. I know very well that you are afraid, that is if you did something bad with the girl and if they find the girl, then we will see."

D says to J: "I want them to find the girl ... you're going to talk s*** about me, that I have buried the girl by the fisherman's hut"

J says to D: "Who said anything about burying, I said nothing about burying."

D says to J: "That's what you testified."

Holloway's mom 'crushed' by dismissal

Associated Press

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The mother of a Mountain Brook teen who disappeared more than a year ago in Aruba said she was "crushed" by the dismissal of the lawsuit filed in New York against the Dutch teen last seen with her daughter.

"That was our only and last shot for justice,"
said Beth Twitty, mother of Natalee Holloway.

Twitty said she knew the case filed in New York State Supreme Court against Joran van der Sloot was a long shot, but the family took a chance.

"Until you hear that door closed you hang onto hope," Twitty said.

The case claimed van der Sloot, who was 18 at the time, was responsible for Holloway's disappearance and sought unspecified damages. Van der Sloot, who has maintained his innocence, was last seen leaving a bar with Holloway, then 18, before she vanished May 30, 2005. He and two friends were arrested a later on suspicion of involvement in her disappearance, but were released.

Twitty said she will be speaking with the attorney that filed the lawsuit, but said this case was seen as the best legal option.

Van der Sloot's lawyer, Joseph Tacopina, told The Associated Press that the college student "was elated" by the judge's decision. (I'll bet! )

"We were never afraid of the facts in this case," Tacopina said Thursday when the case was dismissed. "He did nothing to this girl. ... He's trying to get on with his life." (I'll bet! )

No...nor can I imagine how I'd feel in Beth's place and what I'd be doing to seek justice!

Well you sure aren't going to get justice in a U.S. court by suing non U.S. citizens

Speaking of Aruba, our cruise will stop there again. I'll see what I can dig up
