#151 | Frank, question for you! Do the squirrels like to eat dahlia tubers? I swear I saw the furry critter scampering away with one in his mouth [/quote]
It wouldn't surprise me Chari, Yes they do eat most anything, I saw one the other day break a huge flower head of a rhododendron and start munching away on it. I've never had them bother our Dahlias " Yet " fingers crossed.
How are your Dahlias doing ?
cu take care,

#162 | I think I'm doing something wrong.
It has been two weeks tomorrow since I planted.
NONE of my herbs have even sprouted (and the basil said it would sprout in 5-8 days), and half my flowers are dead.
I've been good about watering... every day to every other day since I planted. I haven't pulled my plants up either... there is NOTHING in my garden. nothing has come up since I planted, not even a weed. Nothing to pull up.
Does anyone know what I'm not doing right?

Reflecting the sun and all that's gone by.
Be strong, my weary wolf, turn around boldly.
Fly high, my baby bird, my angel, my only.

Does anyone know what I'm not doing right? | Hi there Im still not sure just what you planted ......if it was seeds then the germination would all depend on the soil temperature and the depth you planted the seeds, do not give up on them yet ..... and even if it was small plants whatever two weeks is not a long time as plants have to make new roots beore there is much sign of top growth,so its early days yet, Im afraid gardening is all about having patience....if you have been having cold spells of weather that is probably the reason you are not seeing much activity ....its difficult for me to say very much since Im not sure what season you are in at the moment and what sort of temperatures you are getting, its only been the last two weeks that I have seen much happening over here as we have had a very late start to the gardening season this year, owing to long spells of cold weather,we are currently about 2/3 weeks behind normal schedule .....the main thing is not to give up dont let the soil dry out,but only water with a fine rose till everything really gets growing ......look forward to hearing from you,Im sure things will improve soon
PS f you look at the photos in post 160 and look at the seeds in the trays they were planted 8 weeks ago as plugs and its just only now in the last two weeks that they are showing much signs of growth since the temperatures rose a little,I lost a lot of my begonias this year as they damped off owing to sitting in cold wet compost for so long....big dissapointment but thats gardening ......

Does anyone know what I'm not doing right? | Seeds can be slow to germinate... seems like we have to have those warm overnights for a while... then they usually take off. What do you have for temps now?
What kind of flowers did you plant? And what are you watering them with? Every year, we buy a couple of hanging baskets to hang on the bird feeding station, and every year they go downhill almost immediately. We've tried all kinds of potting soil, baskets with reservoirs at the bottom, religiously watering them (they dry out very quickly... just hanging there in the sun, and all)... to no avail. Just recently, we found an article stating that watering plants with hard, well water is not so good. I think it was the iron content that caused problems with nutrient absorbtion, or something. Anyway, well water = bad. I guess I'm going to have to come up with some sort of rain-water collection system if we want to do the hanging basket thing.
Mmmmmm.
There were weeds growing there before, so the soil shouldn't be contaminated...
Did you use any pre-emergent herbicide, weed and feed, or any chemicals at all??

| Wondering why you dont have success with your hanging baskets,I do pretty well with mine, but I dont buy them I start them myself, just using multi purpose compost, this does ok for a about three weeks then feeding is necessary through the season, because the compost has very little plant food in it as Im sure you know I just plant up with a pelargonium in the centre and a couple of Surfinias, two Bacopia, and some hanging multi colour Lobelia, and they do very well ....I will post a couple of pictures later in the year, I just use ordinary tap water to water them (daily) WITHOUT FAIL,sometimes even twice a day if its really hot, rainwater would be great of course if you can save enough
Just taken this pic very quickly to show how they are looking after one week of planting up,pelargoniums not yet added ..
