#197 | Frank, no there isn't any corn or wheat fields close by.. It has many little bulbs at the root of the plant.. It could be some old perrienial that someone put down in the crawl space to over winter and forgot about it.
If the two plants survive I'll know more next year!
Take care!

It keeps smaller weeds down for a while, and holds moisture. The thistles still found their way through, though.
I have read that a thick, thick layer (like a foot or more) of green clippings will actually take nitrogen from the soil as they decompose. I usually keep it to around 3 to 5 inches deep. | | Distinguished Member with 3,149 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2004 Location: the Nickel City, Ontario,Canada Experience: down to earth person |

#204 | Just stunning Telecom!! My flowers are doing fairly well! Something ate all the leaves off one of my Dahlias the other one is sdoing well.. I think I got funky dirt again this year , it seems to never dry out.. Reminder to self to stop buying dirt at Walmart...
I have lots of surprises popping up too, I planted some silver dollar plants a few years ago, last year I think I pulled them thinking they were weeds... and they surprised me with little purple flowers and then I saw the green dollars and knew what they were.. I am going to plant some more this weekend as they are good spreaders..
Have fun in the sun everyone!
Chari

#207 | Never have I had a problem with critters digging up freshly planted bulbs! But I just experienced it, GRRR! LOL.
Anyone have any tips on how to prevent this? I thought I knew a lot about flower gardening but evidently I most cetainly do not lol.
I didn't pick up on any scent of skunk so am guessing it's a squirrel or possum. They were three Asiatic Lilies bulbs bought on clearance, in hopes one of the three at least would grow. It overlooked one of them and for now I have a crate over the last one. Maybe garlic cloves would repel them?
Any ideas are appreciated! Thanks for your feedback!

#208 | Frank, I don't think it was slugs, the pot it is in is on my picnic table on my deck and I don't usually find slugs on the table... Actually I haven't seen any slugs yet this year.. The dahlia is getting some new growth so that's a good sign .
Moonifa, I would think and I'm surely not an expert, that if there is any growth sprouting from that bulb, just keep doing what you are doing, when the plant gets a little bigger the critters should leave it alone..
Happy gardening!

#209 | New Info Learned Lst night while searching on Lilies, I found a site that said Lily bulbs were a favorite snack food LOL. The scent of the newly dug earth is what attracts critters in the first place.
I think I may order some "Gran Cru" from a place online and I will be sure to get viable bulbs. These three were very dry in their package, and since they don't go dormant, they may have been dead. For now I am leaving the crate over the last remaining bulb. I have bought clearance items before and usually get something for my efforts. I will let you know if this one ever emerges LOL.
By the way I am trying to get the Datura seeds you sent me to germinate. I read where you can never let the seeds dry out once planted as it spells certain doom for them. I also read extensively about how poisionous all parts of the plant were. But their beauty demands they be grown lol. I have no pets nor small children that could be endangered by them. Thanks so much for all the seeds you sent! Maybe one day I can take photos to show you what came of them!

#210 | Your Welcome Rachel! I had no idea that the Datura were poisionous
I do believe the seeds need to be scored and soaked, I 'll double check that info and let you know. I do know that the folks here helped me indentify the seed pods a couple of years back!
Take care and good luck with your critter! I know they ruined a few bulbs of mine this year...
