I'm a volunteer Ranger for the "Sustrans", provider of the National Cycleway, and our local group arranged to have this 20 foot, piece of oak set as a bench beside the Kennet & Avon Canal, where I walk the dogs. The new hedge was also planted - oak, hawthorn, blackthorn, elder, etc., (native species), and I helped to weed it in the week, it took us two sessions on following days, pulling out grass and weeds that completely hid the seedlings. There's also another section of hedge to the right of the bench, out of picture - this was weeded, too.

I think it is wonderful, all this volunteer work you do, and to know that there will be results long after you are gone must feel very rewarding. I can't believe we haven't had a hard frost yet. There are still tomatoes on the vine

Thanks, Eggy. Yes, hopefully the hedge will be there for many, many years. We have a Rangers' meeting on Thursday evening, in a nice pub in a very pretty village called "Lacock". It's a National Trust village of very old houses and streets that haven't been spoiled by planning and development.

I love the dahlia's, Frank. I'm determined to grow some next year and will be keeping any eye out for you telling us when they are to be planted!

I chose a tree to plant in one of my friend's fields, under which to bury my little dog. It's a Crataegus persimilis prunifolia, a form of hawthorn that has big creamywhite flowers in summer, beautiful red and gold leaves in autumn and red berries in the winter, along with magnificent thorns.

I planted Schuee's tree today. Here we are. The mulch is sheeps fleece from the sheep who graze the fields. The new hedgerow is fenced off until it's established, to stop them eating the young trees. If we don't have rain, I'll water the tree weekly for a while.

Hello everyone......I love the tree Tuppence.

When we came home from visiting the family in Italy I was pleasantly surprised that there was still quite a lot of colour in the garden. The Nerines with their 'shocking pink' colour went well with the dark red dahlia 'black night' - a lucky coincidence and not a carefully co-ordinated colour scheme.........I gave up trying that years ago!

My dahlias are still blooming well but we have frost forecast for the coming weekend so next week may be a different story so we are enjoying them while we can.

My Eucalyptus are doing well and although all three went in at the same time they are all different shapes and sizes but all have that beautiful shade of gey/green and will provide plenty of foliage for the Christmas flowers (usually red carnations).

It is a long time since I saw a post from MQC - does anyone know if she is ok? I do so enjoy her good ideas of making something special out of 'rubbish' and try to copy her.

Well that is about it for now - regards to you all Margaret

Hello Margaret. Hope your holiday was a good one. I'm pleased you liked the tree. I cycled to the fields to water it yesterday morning, early, only for it to rain for the rest of the day!

It's nice to still have colour in the garden. I have a few roses and a holyhock still in flower, along with cyclamen and and fuschia. By coincidence, I was in a polytunnel at the garden centre today, removing the flowers and stems from sedum, surrounded by young eucalyptus plants. My neighbour has quite a large in in a tub. There are dahlias in flower up the road. I really must grow some next year.

I'm very sorry for your loss of Schuee, Tuppence2. The tree is a lovely idea.
We lost our dog a few months ago, she lived a good long life but it was still hard. There were 5 pets & Ellis was the naughty one. You could see her thinking and she lived to get us going. When my sister was little, Ellis would run in to her room & take off with a favourite barbie. My sister's shrieks were enough to make it fun.
I hope you are finding comfort in happy memories as well.

This is a garden I visited in Mission, B.C. where the family run a dahlia business. I hope you all enjoy.

Hello grngal. Very nice to see you posting in the Potting Shed. Thank you for your kind thoughts. I'm sorry to hear you lost your beloved Ellis recently. I got an apple tree for my greyhound when he died - I think trees are a very good way of remembering loved ones and pets.

The photos are lovely, thank you. What a beautiful garden! Frank, who posts here, lives in British Columbia. It looks a wonderful place to live, or visit.

Penny

Margaret, MQC is not participating at TSG any longer, she did not say why, but I know she is OK.

Hello Eggy.....I am too very sorry to hear that MQC is not available on these pages. At least we know she is alright. Do you know if she still has her website (we used to be able to get to it through the link on this forum) as it is such a shame to lose touch with such nice people.

Thank you so much for taking the trouble to answer my query about her - it was much appreciated.

kind regards.....Margaret

Hi folks, I too am going to miss MQC not posting ,always found her posts wonderfully descriptive and witty and she did wonders with that garden after the unhandymen virtually destroyed it for her ....I just hope she has a rethink and comes back soon.
We have had three nights of frost this last week so its just about put paid to everything thats not hardy now...for me its not been one of the best seasons ever, due mainly to the Summer rains and lack of sunshine...my return to Dahlia growing being the biggest dissapointment of all...well maybe next year ? Glad to see that Penny is going to have a go as well with Dahlias next year ....Did OK with my Tomatoes due to growing them in the greenhouse, but even they suffered from the lack of sun,Runner beans also suffered badly ......one thing I didnt miss was the fact that I didnt have to water everything so much,as it never stopped raining

Grat pics posted by grngal especially that vista of the Dahlias what a show that is,Im having one just like that next year (I wish) ...having to spend quite a bit of time raking up leaves from next doors 50ft Ash tree that every year deposits all its leaves on everyones surrounding garden except for the owner of it ( hate that tree )
More soon folks,take care all
