#1022 | Really good to hear about your garden, Bob, even with its rain problems. I don't think any of my vegetables really grew well, some not at all - let's hope the weather is more veggie-friendly next season.
Yes, I'm hoping to grow dahlias next year. I'll wait until Frank tells me when he's planting his.
I used a different sort of "brown gold" today, Eggy - mulched some of the roses with horse manure from a local smallholding. I've some left but not enough to do all the climbers and the vegetables so will be having more delivered.
I've just been watching "Open Gardens". A programme following the attempts of people to have their private gardens included in the "Yellow Book", by which they can be open to visitors once a year, raising money for charity. Some very interesting gardens in the programme. http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/tv_an...ns_index.shtml
I pruned some of the roses today but will do most of them in the spring.

#1023 | That's a great idea. When I lived in my small town in Wyoming we had a summer tour of gardens, organized by a couple of civic minded gals who sold tickets. The proceeds were used to pay for town beautification, a very worthy cause. My place was included, which I considered a feather in my cap.
One other time my place won the "Golden Shovel" which was prominently placed in the garden. I have never gardened for anything but my own pleasure, but I must admit, the attention was appreciated | | Distinguished Member with 6,679 posts. | | Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England, UK Experience: Learning as I go along |

#1024 | How nice, Eggy. A "Golden Shovel" award. What a good idea. We also have local open days when anyone can have people in to look round. My American neighbour opened her back garden, which is mostly vegetable plot, with flower borders, a greenhouse, and the chickens, to the public on the last open day.
It's a lovely crisp, sunny autumn morning. I might mulch a few more of the roses later. Some tidying up to do of straggly plants then not much else to do until the spring. Some of the roses are still putting on growth and flowers. The camellia I was given as a retirement gift has buds!

#1028 | I visited "The Courts" at Holt, Trowbridge, a National Trust property and here are pictures of the house and the pond. I've made an album for "The Courts" at Webshots and my other photos of the house and garden are there.
"The Courts" was built by a Quaker cloth merchant, and disputes between clothiers were heard there, hence it's name.
Lots of topiary, trees, fungi and plants still flowering. We had lunch in the tea-room, housed on one of the rooms of the old house, which was lined with wooden pannelling. http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main...ecourtsgarden/ http://www.greatbritishgardens.co.uk/courts.htm
