#122 | There has been a dramatic improvement in the weather the last few days,no frosts and prolonged periods of sunshine, its surprising what a difference its made to both me and the plants I can see movements now especially in the growth of the seedlings, have even got some pricked out into seed trays, hopefully now it will all be one way,for the better, even the fish have stated eating so it shows the water is warming up....the Hostas have simply shot up,they seem to be growing an inch a day,and as the saying goes everything in the garden is lovely.....happy gardening everyone

Happy gardening.

#128 | I've decided what Im going to do with the gaden. When it was still in function, Dad had a bed in it made of cinder block. I've cleared out the bed and made 24 little flower pots with the cinder block holes that are sticking up. That little plot is probably all the more I'm going to plant, but I'm going to make a nice little patch out of it.
I cleared out all the weeds growing in the main patch, and I made sure to take out all the roots I could. I mixed some old compost and a little bit of potting soil in with the native soil, and I'm going to put some earthworms in the soil to help it along. I put gravel on the bottom of the cinder block planters because essentially they're pots and it will help with drainage (and I don't want too much of the native soil mixing in because it's positively full of weed seeds). I put a little bit of potting soil in the bottom of each just to get started, but I'm going to have to buy another bag or two because the one bag I found in the garage wasn't even full and I'm going to need more of the stuff.
The "planters" are going to have a rainbow of flowers in them, but I still haven't decided what to plant in the bed. It's under partial shade, and I need something that doesn't need a ton of attention. What would you all suggest?

#130 | Hi teengeekgrrl, Glad to see you have joined the ranks of gardeners,it has to be the most rewarding of hobbies when you can see the results of your labours so beautifully displayed, rather than type out lots of advice that you may not want to know about I reccomend you visit this site http://www.ehow.com/how_13844_plant-garden-bed.html it has side menus on just about everything you might want to know about....I dont know about your seasons of course but by far the showiest flowers are the half-hardy annuals and though their season is relatively short (last frost to first frost) what a riot of colour they give, there are so many of them of course but my particular favourites that I grow a lot of each year include Begonias,French Marigolds,Petunias,Nemesia,Pansies, and of course not forgetting Pelargoniums (Geraniums as they are more popularly called) there are so many of them available nowadays in the F1 varieties, many wth different leaf shapes too....the best idea would be to get hold of a seed catalogue and you could see the pictures of how they look, and it also gives a short description of the plants and size etc.and also soil requirements....any way good luck in your venture, and keep us informed as to how things go,and any questions you want to ask someone here is always willing to help..the thing about gardening is it grows on you The kiss of the sun for pardon
The song of the birds for mirth
One is nearer to God's heart in the garden
Than anywhere else on earth

#131 | Thanks a ton Telecom, the site did help. I'll be sure to keep everyone updated.
I think that I'm going to plant a few varieties of herbs in the center of the plot with the flowers at the sides. I love fresh herbs, and I can grow all I need in the small space I have to work with.
It's off to Lowes sometime today to actually get the seeds or seedlings to start with. I also have to get a good trowel while I'm there, because I don't think we even have one. Sad.
I'll update later with what I get

#133 | I've planted my herbs-one block/row thing of lavender, a row of basil, a row of oregano, and a row of spearmint. My mom has extra potting soil, but it's not exactly here so I gotta wait till we go get it before I can plant the flowers. But I'm getting there.
