no, but now that you mention it.....

I was going to call my autobiography segue.....seems fitting. I also wanted to name my cat laptop and my kid 2.0. All logical, all completely insane, according to my wife. Who put her in charge of sanity anyhow? I certainly didn't.

...I thought this passage on sanity from Wiki could help...

Sanity considered as a legal term denotes that an individual is of sound mind and therefore can bear legal responsibility for his or her actions. It is generally defined in terms of the absence of insanity. It is not a medical term, although the opinions of medical experts are often important in making a legal decision as to whether someone is sane or insane. It is also not the same concept as mental illness. One can be acting under profound mental illness and yet be sane, and one can also be ruled insane without an underlying mental illness.

...that last sentence is enough to rock anyone's boat...

see? You have made my point for me. I can therefore define MY version of sanity, in which reality my sky is a lovely shade of plaid, and if the recliner needs to talk, well, then I guess it's about time somebody listened.

However, you are correct about that last sentence. Rather Orwellian, isn't it?

and btw, what does any of this have to do with destiny and/or free will?

...well... since the last few posts had little to do with "destiny and/or free will" I simply thought that this was "goofing off time" ....time for a pause... wait for the next lead... then, crucify someone...

Alright....so then....not having read the entire thread....why can't it be both?

Destiny to arrange certain events to happen....kind of like....destiny providing the start for each chapter...but then leaving us the free will to choose how it unfolds?

Same guy - more recent band (Sugar) and a song called "Fortune teller". Tells 'em all to clear off and mess up someone elses life. (although I'd prefer it if they just cleared off)

don't think that would work.....it sounds like you are saying our destiny is to be born, then the rest is up to us...is that correct?

used to be pretty good friend with Grant Hart (drummer, Husker Du).....reckoned you may have been referring to the song 'terms of psychic warfare'.....

thought you could sneak a mould moment in here, didn't you?

Not exactly. More like...I think that there are certain things that I am destined to do, and that fate sort of arranges certain circumstances to put me at the right place at the right time in order to fulfill my destiny....yet I still have the choice to accept it or not.

The best example can come up with....once again it's a religious one.... the story of Jesus right before he was arrested. You might say that "fate" arranged his path.....he was fulfilling his destiny to preach to the people....ultimately leading to his arrest and death. Now right before he was arrested...I am referring to the time in the garden...when he prayed.... There was the choice. He did not have to accept his "fate" .

So...that is more what I mean...I think "fate" guides us to certain intersections in our life....but we still have the freedom to choose which path we take.

We are given many opportunities in our life....it is up to us what we do with them.

Does that clarify my opinion better?

yes, sort of. Have you ever read 'A Prayer For Owen Meany'? It's by John Irving, and touches on much of what you just said....yes, we have a choice, but we also have a responsibility to make the correct choice, not just the easiest one. That is what Jesus made the choice he did, so in reality, he really had no choice at all. It was expected that he make the choice he did; hence his plea on the cross 'why hast thou forsaken me'.....

The way I see it, we are regularly dealt a hand of playing cards. Sometimes they are good, sometimes not... and it up to us to decide just how we will play them... and this is how our destiny is determined and played out.
