To the etymology-mobile!

Religion:
Quote:
c.1200, "state of life bound by monastic vows," also "conduct indicating a belief in a divine power," from Anglo-Fr. religiun (11c.), from O.Fr. religion "religious community," from L. religionem (nom. religio) "respect for what is sacred, reverence for the gods," in L.L. "monastic life" (5c.); according to Cicero, derived from relegare "go through again, read again," from re- "again" + legere "read". However, popular etymology among the later ancients (and many modern writers) connects it with religare "to bind fast", via notion of "place an obligation on," or "bond between humans and gods." Another possible origin is religiens "careful," opposite of negligens. Meaning "particular system of faith" is recorded from c.1300.

Modern sense of "recognition of, obedience to, and worship of a higher, unseen power" is from 1535. Religious is first recorded c.1225. Transfered sense of "scrupulous, exact" is recorded from 1599.

I edited out the Spirituality part, as it wasn't a direct reference to the question and hand, and I forgot which thread I was in.

religious, to me, is very similar to spiritual. Ask my sister, and you will get a very different answer, as she is devout Roman Catholic, and religion means mass thrice weekly and all the other accoutrements that go along with that particular faith. I am more of the 'laid-back' type, and have never really understood why a God would require me to sing to Him, as that is painful at best (not a good singer here - but what I lack in quality I make up in quantity, as I am rather loud), so I talk to him in my own special way.

I know it's not sneaky, just an honest question. Hope I was clear enough.

Very different animals... positive thinking summons all your intellectual and physical resources... whereas Spirituality deals with the relationship between God and your soul...

Actually, I tried to eschew said obfuscation after realizing how misleading my original post was for this thread.

I firmly believe we all have free will. We make the decisions that will influence who we become and what we do with our lives.
