#526 | I used to fill the clean out milk jugs with water and put them in the freezer. If you got a deep freezer with added room all the better because you can put in even more jugs. Plus if the power goes out you got all the jugs of ice to keep things cold.
But when we went camping we used the really big ice chest just for the jugs and we took 6 or 8 jugs and put in it and then 1 or two jugs in the smaller ice chest and had only one bag of ice. We was camping for 4 days and it was very hot but we came home with jugs of ice. As it melts you got ice cold drinking water too.
It is just me here so I don't fill up the fridge either but have jugs of water in it and even some taped up empty boxes to help fill in space so there is less to cool. When you open the door you lose the cool air but you got the cool air still in the boxes and the cool water jugs. But the fridge uses less power to cool if it is not empty to fill in the added spaces with something to save money. | | Distinguished Member with 3,310 posts. | | Join Date: Jan 2001 Location: Roseburg, OR USA Experience: Intermediate |

No savings = Out Of Luck !
This is retarded. I see it all the time even with my friends and associates. Buying stuff because it feels good, however a fare number of them actually continue to save. I'd just mention that they would have a lot more if they didn't buy as much. Like me they owe nobody outrageous debt. I just paid off my credit card bill today. Overpaid again.
I was waiting for the bank to open. So while waiting I decided to access an ATM and review some of my recent purchases. I allot $30 or so a month for when I eat out for when I don't cook. Normally that food can last me two days. I have to curtail that spending. I already down my food to the basic 'quality requirements' as far as grain is concerned since I eat that in large portions. So I've saved and/or balanced out between those two.
One thing I have spent money on is socialization which has proven rewarding and may prove quite fruitful in the future. I have to spend a little bit more on socialization social-networking next month, but it is in my best interests. Also going to try to finish my resume to look for another and for some possible exams for certifications (non computer) to take during the coming spring.
Next month I am going to see if I can still use my cash back to pay off part of my balance.

#530 | I was with an associate today and came to realize that this person spends too much money! It wasn't the choices in health or quality that was a problem. It was simply a matter of price. I will discuss this with my associate later. It's hard to tell a friend that they spend to much on food. Also, I have to try to teach them how to be a bit more cheap. Quote:

#531 | I went to the mall to buy buisness wear and searched for a car while in route. Unfortunately there were close to no car dealers. Most have closed down. When I was in the mall they had many items I wanted (as in needed for the objective), but nothing in my size.
Looking @ cars now online and have found a few prospects. | | Distinguished Member with 2,532 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2000 Location: Location: USA Experience: Somewhere between Beginne |

#532 | America's Cheapest Family Saving Money
America's Cheapest Family Saving Money http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKJTxuzvkXw
"Take leftovers to work, wow didn't know that one at all LOL."
Granted this is america's cheapest family - a family we should all emulate right now.
The average lunch I make will cost $3.00 to $6.00. If I order from local establishment, that $3-$6 will normally last me two days worth of lunch. So depending on whether or not I finish it, it normally works out economically. Sometimes I'll skip meals because I am not that hungry, etc.
I try to restric this practice to socialization and networking. For example I spent the evening with an associate of mine and we ate well.

#534 | How to Save on Health Insurance
I like this article, we have an HSA (because my hubby "sells" them at his job), and it's nice because you aren't limited on what you can use the money for--as long as it's medical related. It eliminates the need for vision and dental insurance, and we still have a cheap plan that covers emergencies so that we aren't scrambling to pay for any sort of major accidents should they occur. And it's a heck of a lot cheaper than the other insurance his work offered that was based on aging bankers around the nation.

O yea I found 10 cents in the street yesterday. | Just taking your own lunch to work can save so much money no matter what you eat. I did it for years.
Then you can take what you want with you if you don't want to make your sandwich again of time so you can make it all just before eating it because it taste even better that way.
But my bigger lunch ice chest was great for all the food and my one quart vacuum bottle at the bottom staying really cold because this was all in my truck but it tasted good and things keep good. | | Distinguished Member with 2,532 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2000 Location: Location: USA Experience: Somewhere between Beginne |

I fill them a little over half full to freeze and add a cold water on top when they are used. My husband takes them fishing and hunting. He used them to cool his lunch and later on he had cool water to drink. I found the vinegar jugs took less space because they go flat against the sides.
I still use this idea to send food home with my kids when they come only for this I use water or pop bottles. You don't have to buy special containers a box or bag will do and the food stays fresh.
If you brown bag lunches. Make up all the sandwiches when you grocery shop or have a roast or chicken, wrap and freeze them. Grab a sandwich out of the freezer in the morning and add whatever else you want and the sandwich keeps the rest cool and is thawed by lunch time. Do not add mayo or anything mixed with it. If you want mayo take a small container of it and add before you eat. I did this all the time for kids lunches, it saves time in the morning. I froze their juice too and it worked as a cooler too.

#538 | I like the jugs that have a screw on top the best.
My mom use to make up all the sandwiches and put them in the freezer. Took a little doing to get it to turn out the best way. I loved mayo on it but it gets the bread all wet. So had to do like you did. So many was to make thing ahead of time. Plus now look at all the types of container there are for packing a lunch hot or cold. Plus no glass in then now because it is stainless unless you get glass but who wants glass that breaks. You can take hot soups to keep you warm in the winter or just to get something hot. Even just hot water if you need hot water to fix something else. | | Distinguished Member with 2,532 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2000 Location: Location: USA Experience: Somewhere between Beginne |

I am going to finalize the "Punishment Fund." Yes, what is it you ask, well it is self-explanatory. I am going to tally every foolish economic misstep and invest in a fund just to restore every lost penny from stupid actions taken after my unfortunate situation. When I think of all the possible business ventures, all the possible profit, at the least breaking even in those aforementioned could have at least taught me something. I must gather my strength and restore ALL that was lost. Yes, I know you can't 'always' live in the past! In this case I KNOW I AM RIGHT. I will restore all that was lost.
My only question is how to establish this fund. Another checking account? CD compounding?
LOL even the greatest have their issues.
Any comments?

#540 | I'd go with a CD, or even a savings account with a decent rate--HSBC has a decent rate right now, and it doesn't have all the penalties associated with CD's. | | | |
