I live in an apartment. I tried a filter and the filter would smell moldy in a short time. So I changed to bottled for drinking. My friends who use filters don't have a problem so I decided to not chance it.

It could just be the water around here. I am about 5 blocks from the river and there are sloughs around here. I just don't know the cause or if it's unhealthy.

poochee,
What is the source of your water supply?
I mean is it a Utility, or is it a community served by a single well or spring?

It's a Utility. None of my friends live in this area of Sacramento. They test everything else in this complex, so I assume the water is OK. It is hard water. In other areas the water is soft.

Have the local government institution test the water to make sure it is good enough to drink. Or have it done privately.

Yes, the utility that supplies you will (or should) test it for free for a limited number of parameters, a private lab you'd have to pay but you could get more extensive testing if you wanted.

One money saving tip is to maintain a budget. Microsoft has a number of free personal and family budget templates available for Excel.

State and Municiple Abatements/Credits/Refunds...
Hello, I just wanted to say that you should look to see if there are any city or state abatements or credits for your residence. I was informed of one about two months ago and applied. Yesterday I recieved a check for $400. Even the goverment website said that "many qualify, but simply don't apply." So, now that I know about it, I plan to apply for it each and every year!

By some form of home gym and stationary arobic machine (bike, tredmill, etc). The occasional winter jog is worthwhile to. If you're gonna do it, the minimal I recommend is twice a week. That way you won't have to kill yourself half the summer trying to get back in shape.

And for us heating with wood is cheaper than heating with oil.

Instead of having a big lawn, put a garden in. It is hard to get started, you won't have much the first year. But you have to be patient.

Get rid of that air conditioning. It is hot up here too, in the summer. We just use ceiling fans in the bedrooms at night.

Say away from those restaurants and fast food outlets.
Same here dude. I rarely use the dryer. Only exception is when I wash comforters and blankets. Or if I really need the clothing dry by the next day. Otherwise sunlight works great!

I use my slow cooker to make casseroles and such, as it doesn't heat up the house like the oven does in the warmer months, but still does a decent job on "baking". Just remember to halve the amount of liquid you put into a dish when you use the slow cooker or it will come out soupy.

In the colder months, I like to use the oven to do most of my cooking, as it's electric, and our gas bill gets SUPER high in the winter, using the oven kinda spreads out the expense....plus the oven costs a LOT less to run (it's one of those energy star ones) than our stone age central heat.
