I've said this for years, and I've also read it in a few sociology books, one of the major issues facing Ameirican society today and for the next generation at least, is the fact that we have given up the 'nuclear family' idealhood in favor of materialistic gains, which is a damn shame.

You don't need a $60k truck that gets 12 mpg if you live in a city. The only reason people get them is for status symbols, or to keep up with the Jones'. Now that they have that ring around their neck, they are forced into having a dual income household, and the ones who suffer from this materialstic feeding frenzy are the children under, say, 2 years of age who are dumped at day care for up to 12 hours daily.
As opposed to having mom or dad around to help them mature.
With that attitude, something tells me you are going to wake up at 60 wondering why you are alone. | First off, I am not deciding the choice for anybody! If I had that power, then I'd be rich!
I already know why I am alone:
1) I am poor: Granted this isn't much of a reason, but if I was big roller I wouldn't have to worry so much about food, shelter, education, etc.
2) Not like everybody else: I still relatively young, but not getting any younger. I learned a long time ago, my courtship skills need work. However, I have other priorities such as the aformentioned. Yes, having a wife or girlfriend could contribute to obtaining those. I don't match most women of my age in terms of intrest or idealology. Most women I know may consider me a friend, ally, but not their boyfriend. Those who might have kids and thus shoudln't spend so much time on men. Many call me mature, some call me wierd, and most call me kind. P.S. I have no criminal record, unless that IDtheif did something .
3) No Car: Can't afford one. That is I cannot afford to maintain it.
4) Can't dance.
I could have had relationships with 2 or 3 women, but I admit I screwed those up before they even evolved into anything beyond classmates. Hmm, well too late now; also, most women I've even had a remote chance to be involved with are older and more educated than me.
5) Don't go out much: I don't go out much because I need to develope my social network more.
6) There is another detail, but I can't go into it because of the PG-13 restrictions on the form so moving on.
GETTING BACK ON TOPIC, I have nothing against the idea. I am simply saying that I don't have that level of faith. Also, I took two sociology classes and two economics classes. Thus I agree with the bulk of you materialism statement. As you may have already read on my other threads if I want something I try to find the cheapest way to get it! That being said I am no fool; money is good! Money can do alot in this world.
Money provides medical care, food, shelter, and education. The better you have of all of these the better your life normally is. Technically I am working class, but it wouldn't take much for me to become the working poor.
Not to go off on a tangent, but is why I am considering the military (refer to my military thread). Those who serve in the military and live often have better lives, at least those I've know and encountered.
Strength = money = better life!

There needs to be open lines of communication BOTH WAYS for any relationship to work.
And I don't mean 'I did this.' I mean 'What do you think of this?'
Money is an offshoot of how hard you work and what your goals are. If you set your goals relatively low and easy to reach, you can end up working very hard for very little indeed. If you set your goals higher, almost out of reach, you will work just as hard, but with higher incremental successes.
The military thing is a great idea, IMO. I wasn't in, but that is probably the only thing in my life I would change were I to live it over again.
