There's a problem with people of a high ethos as well though - they get ignored. People like MSM Hobbes and iltos, who listen to all before formulating their message, seem to get ignored by those interested in debate.

Seems to me there has to be some "middle-ground" between having so little ethos that you attract a lot of attention but no agreement(even when the truth is clearly on your side), and having lots of ethos but attracting no attention to your speech.
Also, the methodology of how threads go down in flames. I actually started a thread about that. It's been an interesting study in forum psychology.

Well, that didn't work to well...it has a mind of its own...it is too long already anyway...
I did however get it all off my face and gelled back for the day...that kept me cool as the thermometer got to 105 degrees yesterday

Civ debate is a weird animal. People seem to have a desire to respond to posts that are argumentative or non-sensical moreso than they do to posts that are clearly thought out.
