There is a clause at the end of the paragraph of the league rules (section covering this incident) that seems to be the contentious part of what the issue is all about - i.e. how it can be interpreted as it looks like it is clearly open to interpretation although the league's intention is that it not be.

On the one hand, the rule appears to be ambiguous, and I suspect that this is how Belichik interpreted it. For sure, technically an infraction of the rules, but open to interpretation nonetheless.

Interestingly, none of the articles reference the full paragraph (only in part as far as I have seen) regarding the specific rule in contention. Our local news station in Boston, however, had the full paragraph on last night's sportscast.

Note: stealing signals is not against the NFL rules - i.e. not cheating, but using video camera during game may be. And, the Pats got caught, due to Belichik's misinterpretation of the rule.

-- Tom

P.S. Can't find the full NFL rules online, only a digest which is incomplete.

In twelve years, I can count the number of Panthers' games I have missed on one hand. I've never seen them play as badly as they did today. Ever. If we don't improve, we won't win another game.

I didn't catch the game, but saw the score I was hoping they could get a 2-0 start this year. I saw the highlight of the kickoff that turned the game around to Houston. Hopefully they can get their act together.

How did Delhomme do? I'm hoping Carr will take some snaps this year.

Delhomme didn't do badly. He was sacked three times as the o-line couldn't stand up to Houston's rush. He had a lot of accurate throws dropped and 1 interception.

Not one section of the Panthers team performed very well today. One of Houston's TDs came off a fumble of a kick return by Nick Goings which ended up in the end zone and Houston recovered it. The defense didn't get any pressure on Houston's QB (can't think of his name right now) and couldn't contain Houston's RB's. The receiving corps dropped too way many passes and the running game was non-existent. The longest run they got was five yards.

Steve Smith played exceptional football. He was responsible for all 21 of Carolina's points. The first 14 in the first quarter with two beautiful touchdown catches and one more in the 4th quarter. In the fourth, he was hit several times then looked to be wrapped up by at least 5 defenders. He made a cut to the left and it was off to the races for a 74 yard TD. That came with about five minutes left to play and the ensuing onside kick was recovered by Houston.

Yeah, the Panthers have been very disappointing the last couple of years. They have to get their act together. Steve Smith is definitely a huge part of the offense there. They were very smart in resigning him with a big contract.

Matt Schaub is the quarterback for the Texans now, they got him from the Falcons. He is a really good QB from Virginia. Very accurate, and I know the Falcons wish they had him now.

I would have picked San Fran out of those three to possibly be 2-0, but definitely not Detroit or Green Bay

Just wait a while, Ashes. The Panthers are capable of playing so far above the level they played yesterday. We had a bad game. All is not lost. It's only week 2. I have faith that the home team will be good this year.

He played two crappy defenses. Lets see what happens against the Bears as long as Rex is not giving away presents on the ground or via the air.

PS Laron Landry said he will tatoo his helmet into Romo's chest for him.

Wins against crappy defenses still count in the Win column. Not only that, but if you watched the games, you'd have seen that he did a great job. Give the man some credit.

Again we will see this weekend. I like the Bears and the Raiders I hate to admit it, but I do. Do we want to do a sig bet if the Cowboys beat the Bears? Or vice versa.
