Silverlight strikes out with MLB

MLB.com no longer uses Microsoft's Silverlight to stream games to its 500,000 subscribers. This season fans will watch live and on-demand video via Adobe's Flash player.

Orthopaedic experts examine overhead.

Baseball season is underway. With the pros, college and high school teams taking to the baseball diamonds and Little Leaguers soon to follow, orthopedic specialists at Rush University Medical Center are cautioning players to be aware of and take precautions against throwing injuries. An analysis of pitching injuries by researchers at Rush is published in the March/April issue of Sports Health.

Great discussion of pitcher injuries and advice for young baseball players!

Learning how to hit a 95 mph fastball from a blind guy.

One of baseball’s greatest hitters, the Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, has taken the advice of the man known simply as the blind guy. Mark Wetzel cannot tell you exactly what his wife or children look like. Though he can tell you how to hit a 95-mile-per-hour fastball.

The Bird is Gone
Mark 'The Bird' Fidrych, 54; pitcher entralled fans.

Detroit Tigers pitcher Mark Fidrych began games by grooming the surface of the mound and speaking to himself via the baseball. In 1976 he was the American League Rookie of the Year. (File/The Boston Globe/1976)

I started another thread last night as I could not find this one.

I went to many of his games in 1976. It was something else. The team was lousy but he was getting sell outs when he pitched. He was one in a million.

Tall Catchers, Managers in Uniform, Pitchers Batting 9th, and Other Bad Ideas in Baseball.

For as much progress as there has been in baseball, there are still some old notions and orthodoxies that ought to be reexamined. Here are a few baseball ideas that are dubious, wrongheaded or just downright illogical.
