Old pipes prevent bottled water ban

PITTSBURGH, June 28 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh's mayor wants to lessen the city's bottled water consumption, but old pipes in the city-county building are getting in the way, a spokeswoman said.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors approved a plan Monday to advise cities to put and end to spending taxpayer dollars on bottled water because it produces extra trash and costs too much money, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Saturday.

Joanna Doven, a spokeswoman for Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, said the city leader backs pro-environment efforts, but old pipes in the 91-year-old city building turn water a gross orange color.

Accidental fungus leads to promising cancer drug

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A drug developed using nanotechnology and a fungus that contaminated a lab experiment may be broadly effective against a range of cancers, U.S. researchers reported on Sunday.

The drug, called lodamin, was improved in one of the last experiments overseen by Dr. Judah Folkman, a cancer researcher who died in January. Folkman pioneered the idea of angiogenesis therapy -- starving tumors by preventing them from growing blood supplies.

Neighbors Turn To YouTube To Track Down Thieves

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― A homeowner is turning to YouTube to help identify a pair of suspected thieves, but authorities warn that such actions can do more harm than good.

The video shows two men attempting to steal a motorbike from a local home, but they have no luck, and eventually take off empty-handed. Dave Johnson wasn't so fortunate, and thieves were able to steal his bike last Thursday morning.

Dave didn't have any cameras of his own, so he posted an ad on Craigslist in hopes of warning other local bike owners. He soon received a response from a neighbor, who had caught the two men on his surveillance camera.

"Somebody tried to steal his bike about 5:00 in the morning," Dave said.

They posted the video on YouTube, but authorities say they may have hurt their case.

Sgt. Tim Curran of the Sacramento Sheriff's Department said releasing possible evidence in any case can damage the chances of getting a conviction in court.

"It pollutes the jury pool, if you will," he said. "A lot of times, things can come out from that video that the suspect can use in their defense."

Well, maybe not odd...

Dial-up users "don't want broadband"

The majority of dial-up internet users say they don't want to upgrade their connection to broadband, according to a new study in the US.

The Pew Internet research found that 62% of dial-up users had no interest in upgrading to a high-speed connection.

That's me. I was going to upgrade a couple years ago and my ISP told me I didn't need it. The beauty of having a local ISP and getting to talk to the same person who speaks English. If he is off I find out when he will be back and call again later. It would be only a dollar a month more. I'm not an avid surfer. I use it for info only. I don't play on-line games. Plus my dial-up is fast for me I'm not in a hurry! I might be considered cheap though, $14.50 a month sounds good to me.

I think it's about that much for DSL here... though this is a "big city". Most dial up account if they are still around here in VA is about $9.99

Chess boxers slug it out

A RUSSIAN man has been crowned world champion in the novelty sport of chess boxing, a game that requires equal skill at moving pawns and throwing punches.

Mathematics student Nikolai Sazhin, 19, competing under the name "The President'' knocked out a 37-year-old German policeman Frank Stoldt, who served as a peacekeeper in Kosovo until recently.

The loser said he was simply too punch-drunk to fend off checkmate.

"I took a lot of body-blows in the fourth round and that affected my concentration. That's why I made a big mistake in the fifth round: I did not see him coming for my king,'' he said.

Berlin is home to the world's biggest chess boxing club with some 40 members and it is in an old freight station here that the two men settled the matter early yesterday.

The match began over a chess board set up on a low table in the middle of a boxing ring.

Discord at the Amalgamated Order of Real-Bearded Santas

Quote:
The Amalgamated Santas, one of the nation's largest Santa groups, are dealing with a schism in their ranks. The rift has left burly bearded men accusing one another of bylaw violations, profiteering and behaving in un-Santa-like ways. Some Santas have filed complaints of wrongdoing against others in Kentucky and Pennsylvania.

The once-fraternal Santa impersonators began to split last year when a power struggle unseated their top Santa and most of his board of directors. Further polarizing the Santa world, new splinter groups have formed to woo disaffected Clauses and their allies. The new Fraternal Order of Real-Bearded Santas, for example, also welcomes "affiliates of Mrs. Clauses, Designer Beard Santas and Elves."
